Here you go, my latest trip in the Mach E. It's significant because my data shows these cars can actually be quite efficient even running the heat.

Let's start with the background my car is an ER AWD Premium with 18" select wheels and 225/60/18 104V Vredestein Quatrac 5 all-weather tires installed. This care was built in February and delivered in March it has about 15k miles on it and has not had the customer calibration update. The Quatrac tires are technically are not winters but do have the 3PMSF winter rating for traction. I preheat the car, set a departure time, and then set the heat and fan on automatic. The way up I set the heat to 70 degrees and on the way back to 67 because I was getting too hot.

I used cruise control all the way and my cruse is set for 4MPH over the speed limit.

The first leg went really well with the cabin preheated the car averaged 3.1m/KWH
Most of this was at 69MPH

In the second part unfortunately I forgot to take a picture it averaged 2.6m/KWH. Speed increases in this section to 74MPH

I charged in Alexandria, MN, and had lunch. After lunch, the car averaged 2.6m/KWH at 74MPH

the next day I traveled from Fargo to Detroit Lakes, MN in the morning it was colder than the rest of the days 18 degrees I did set a departure time and drove 74mph averaged 2.5m/KWH

Below is the photo from my trip back to Forgo from Detroit lakes, MN

Next is my trip back to Saint Paul, MN. Temp was in the high 20's and it snowed about 3 inches. I preheated the car and this pic is from my first stop.

The last photo is at Home in Saint Paul, you can see I just wanted to get home with speeds 80+ mph and some fun acceleration. I also hit some traffic when I got back into the cities and the efficiency figure went up.

From the other posts, I have seen I think this is a very good result. I attribute efficiency to the 18" tire setup it just seems to work well. I have had a few trips around in the metro be over 3.5m/KWH so this may be the hot setup for winter.

Note I switched out the center caps and lug nuts to black look better IMHO

Nice Post!

preheating clearly helps… and although nobody wants it to be true, you gain something like 5~10% range with smaller wheels. I first saw that on an engineering explained episode.

? to a fellow Minnesotan.

These seem like good results and they definitely validate preconditioning.

How do you like the Vredesteins? I'm considering switching to something like this if, once I get the car, I find the stock Michelins inadequate in the snow. Did you get a chance to compare the Quatracs to the Hypertracs?

Looks like you also painted your wheel arches, right? If so, did you do that locally?

I suspect the wheel size impact is something like 4-6%, if the Tesla math transfers to the MME. This Engineering Explained video and this chart are data points.

Excellent write up. Wheel and tires matter. That’s my take away. I changed to 245 50 19’s on my car about the same time winter hit. I wouldn’t get close to 3miles/kwh with the same AWD ER. Good info.

It looks like the tires are slightly overinflated (low 40s vs 39 spec) which could be helping the efficiency.

Thanks for the fine write up!

Tires are inflated to 39PSI when cold. When you drive they warm up, and that increases pressure. This picture was taken on the road so I expect the pressure to be up a bit.

These Quatrac tires are great traction in snow and ice is much better than the factory tires. The other surprising factor is how much better than handle. Cornering & breaking just feel more composed very grippy & stable tires, it gives me a more confident feel on the road. The ride is smoother and I don't feel they are any louder. My summer tires are 245/50/19 Hypertrac and I like the ride of the Quatrac better. I looked at the European ratings the Quatrac has much lower rolling resistance than the Hypertrac too.

When it was being repaired I had LaMettrie's collision paint the wheel arches. Someone hit and run in a parking lot it was not that much damage $3000 or so but sad to see my new car all scraped up. Probably more sad that they did not even leave a note.

Gotcha, makes sense. It’s a little odd that they increased by different amounts. Mine seem to stay within 1 PSI of each other.

Thanks for the Info.

Love the wheel flares painted.

Would love to see the new data with the single digit temps today in MSP, or even the sub zero stuff coming next month.

Please do a follow up...

Thank you for sharing. As a fellow Minnesotan this makes me feel a little better about winter range. Curious to how it'd would handle today in the single digits and 30 MPH winds!

Fellow Twin Cities dweller. I had those tires on my golf. How are they doing in the snow for ya? Trying to decide if I should just buy those, a separate set of winter tires, or just deal with standard Continentals on my standard GT

tirerack isn't showing those as available tire sizes for the quatrac 5? Are they just out of stock and not showing it due to that?

The Quatrac 5 has been replaced by the Quatrac Pro. The Quatrac Pro is a better tire especially in the rain and quieter I had these Quatrac 5's on a previous vehicle so it was a bit of an experiment.
