Great article with Electrek's take from the Washington Auto Show. The fixed the images that got screwed up in their article.

Ford Mustang Mach-E: sleeping cozy and frunk-gating [Gallery]

The Ford Mustang Mach-E didn’t steal the show at the Washington Auto Show, it was the show. Pictures below.

GM had the floor space up front by the entrance, and the 2020 Chevy Bolt was the first on display.

The 2020 Chevy Bolt

Electrek staff debated whether it was a good idea to show off EVs while they’re plugged in to a dedicated, hardwired EVSE, as shown above. Pro: it grabs peoples’ attention, let’s them know that this isn’t just a compact car they’re almost certainly uninterested in. Con: most people who see this don’t know anything about EVs, and this picture perpetuates the false perception that if you don’t have regular access to one of these dedicated plugs, you can’t use the car. This writer would prefer they put up a mannequin holding the portable EVSE with the regular plug up high, showing off that you can fuel up anywhere.

Volkswagen: nothing to see here folks

Electrek participated in an EV press tour, but Volkswagen had nothing to show.

Ford Mustang Mach-E gets all the attention

The Ford Mustang Mach-E, GT version pictured below, deservedly got all the attention throughout the Washington Auto Show’s media day morning.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E

Here is the Ford Mustang Mach-E’s trunk space, lots of depth, looks good. But what if you want to sleep back there? Check out those two latches we circled in yellow:

Mustang-Mach-E-trunk-one-seat-down-latches-circled.jpg

The latches can be used to lift up the liner, make it nearly flat:

The hidden trunk compartment, familiar to Model 3 owners:

Unfortunately, they didn’t have one of their standard portable EVSEs on hand. Electrek was the first to detail the Mustang Mach-E’s portable charger.

Here’s a video of the trunk opening:

Here’s the front console area. The user interface isn’t ready for prime time yet, so no demos were allowed of the menu navigation.

The passenger side view, notice the USB-C in the center console too:

Still offering tactile controls, but keeping them a bit out of sight, I like this approach:

Lots of headroom:

My only slight criticism that’ll maybe mostly make sense just to Model 3 owners: there’s too many ‘P’s going on here:

The glass roof:

The view looking back:

The Ford Mustang Mach-E frunk is really cool. As a Tesla Model 3 owner, I am straight up jealous of this frunk, which doubles as a cooler. Notice the drain in the middle of the bottom, you can just fill this frunk with ice to go frunk-gaiting:

The Ford Mustang Mach-E door handle. Just like with Tesla, your phone is your key, so it’ll be unlocked automatically:

Electrek’s Take

My first viewing did not disappoint at all. Am even more excited for the Mach-E now, I think it’s gorgeous. But we still need to get some hands on time with the user interface software. And of course, we pray that Ford is working with EV charging networks to ensure that Mach-E drivers have a flawless experience each time they need a DC fast charge.

The other takeaway which was almost awkwardly apparent was that Ford and Tesla are the only OEMs with an exciting offering to show off (Tesla is not part of the Washington Auto Show). I didn’t see any media bother to take a even a second glance at any other vehicle at the show. Toyota’s centerpiece was its hydrogen-fueled Mirai. No one I spoke with cared, nor did I see any media approach their exhibit, despite it being a novelty on the east coast.

They wouldn't let me sit in it last night, thus, I was very disappointed. My friend even threatened to cancel his fake reservation.

I'm considering driving up to DC (from Roanoke, VA) tomorrow to see it in person. Any idea if they'll let general admission folks up close to it?

I'm sure, but I can't tell you if they will open the door. Last night they opened the door and people were looking in the trunk. Not sure if they will have a rope or something around it.

nice. going over there tomorrow. Those seats look really basic low end. kinda ruins the sleek look of the rest of the car. I hope that improves, or it could be a deal killer for me.

My wife and I plan to attend the show in D.C. next week but may not bother if it remains roped off. How disappointing! We are eager to explore the vehicle enough to determine for ourselves whether Ford really did misrepresent a sporty crossover as a proper SUV before deciding whether to keep our reservation or wait and see where the collaboration with Rivian leads.

I stopped by the MME again before I left and they opened the doors and the trunk for us. So, you could sort of see inside. But, that’s it. You definitely were not allowed in the vehicle.

It’s pretty clear that this is a traveling GT prototype. I don’t think it’s anywhere near the final version and that’s why they don’t want anyone getting too close. Also, I wonder if it’s starting to get a little run down as this (prototype?) car has been traveling around the country since last year.

If you compare some of the other models on display elsewhere (e.g., the First Edition carbonized grey model in Europe), the grabber blue display model that is here at the DC show looks very basic. The interior looks really cheap whereas display models elsewhere have an upgraded and more polished interior.

Notwithstanding, I think it’s worth it to see the grabber blue display model. You can get a feel for the size of the car and it’s exterior and see if it’s something that interests you.

I was able to see the interior, but not sit, and it looked somewhat cheap to me as well. But then I went into the configurator on the website and the inside of the GT displayed is very different from the one at the show. So I agree with many here that it is not a full production model but it is good enough to get some perspective on the exterior size, tablet size, etc.

The seat materials remind me of my Focus RS seats.

Yeah the seats look like cheap 80s seats.. Might even be a deal killer for me. Aren't Mustang NY seats bolstered? The rep their swore it was production style. Hope not.

Other than that the blue car at the show is really beautiful. Same color as the new corvette on display.

At the San Diego Auto show I asked the rep there specifically about the Mach E seats. While he couldn't confirm anything, he said that the Edge and Escape Titaniums were the most comparable, and it would NOT be using the seats from the mustang coupe. Neither of those were that great to sit in but not terrible either. Now the Expedition Platinum they had on hand...?

I went to the show Saturday evening and got to see the GT on display - couldn't get on the white platform or look inside but they did open the doors/trunk/frunk. It was shorter than I was thinking, which is great for me. I have a FE in Grabber Blue on reservation and I'm very happy with my choice. The Grabber Blue is definitely metallic, which I haven't seen many people discuss. I tried to get decent pictures even with the blue lighting all around it.

The lights were a bit wonky on this pre-production model (passenger tail lights seemed out, and when they flashed the lights they were obviously malfunctioning, see videos).

I'll definitely want to procure the GT wheels, if possible, at some point. I love them.

Sorry for the picture spam, but I figure folks don't mind seeing more.
