Background
I’ve owned a Mach-E model 22 since April 2022 and have never received any OTA’s. The dealer has helped somewhat with a few updates, but I got fed up with waiting for new features, so I decided to follow this guide to do it myself: https://www.macheforum.com/site/thr...ach-e-with-fdrs-alternative-to-forscan.10217/

While preparing to do the updates I looked through various threads (mainly the one mentioned above, but I found the many comments confusing, and so I decided to make this post, which may help others.

Setup
I bought the following:
  • Battery charger, 40A, capable of charging AGM
  • Adapter: Mongoose-Plus
  • FDRS license
    • I went to www.motorcraftservice.com and logged in with my regular Ford account. The website changed a bit since the original guide was written, so the license can be added to the cart in the tab “Service Info”
    • When buying the license, I could not do it with my regular Ford account connected to the car. Instead of the buy button this message was shown: “Please contact your legal representative to purchase products”
    • Ford Mustang Mach-E My experience with updating my Mach-E with FDRS for the first time 1673181227876
    • Instead I created a new account and configured the account to be the “legal representative”
  • 32 GB USB drive
    • Formatted as exFAT (as instructed by FDRS)
Installed updates
I had these pending updates and a OBCC which is not shown below:

Ford Mustang Mach-E My experience with updating my Mach-E with FDRS for the first time 1673181220780

Through various threads/comments it seemed like the best approach was to install the updates in the following order:
  1. GWM
  2. TCU
  3. APIM
  4. PCM
  5. Others…
I ended up doing it as follows:
  1. GWM (installed through USB drive)
  2. APIM (became available after the GWM update, installed through USB drive)
  3. TCU (became available after the APIM update, installed through USB drive)
  4. PCM (installed SOBxxx and BECM updates as well, no USB drive used)
  5. HVAC (no USB drive used)
  6. OBCC (not in the screenshot, but its an old screenshot so…, no USB drive used)
    1. Did not disappear after the first install, but tried again which made it disappear
  7. PCM
    1. Did not disappear after the first install. On second and third try I got an error
    2. Error: "Procedure Unsuccesful - GetConfigDataFromGIVIS Modified Configuration data is missing from Ford server"
And so, the only remaining update is the PCM. I read various places, that it happens with this module, but it annoys me…

Most updates where quick enough, but the APIM update took like 3 hours or so. I had a size of 15 GB which took long to download and even longer to copy to the USB drive. When installing the update it counted 64 files. I was pretty surprised of the size since as I’ve read it should be around 5 GB.

Results
I’m pretty sure I don’t have the latest Sync version, but two very important improvements for me was included in the update:
  • The dreaded DAB notification no longer pops up when listening to DAB radio
  • I can now used Android Auto in full screen
The Sync versions before and after:
  • Sync version before update: 21297_PRODUCT, Revision 253
  • Sync version after update: 22228_PRODUCT, Revision: 539
It took around 5 hours in total, which was much more than anticipated. This was mainly because of the APIM update. I don’t know if APIM updates in general has this size in GB and time consumption…?

As a final note: The update process was straight forward (apart from the time it took). I was a bit worried to mess it up, but the only issue was the PCM update that would not go away. Two times the download of a file failed, but FDRS asked if i would retry, which i did and it succeeded the second time.

I hope this post can help others that consider doing the updates themselves.

BTW: Any comments or corrections (fx to the recommended order of updates when installing them, are greatly appreciated)

FDRS is famous for select updates not clearing off the SW Update tab after performing an update, it’s been an issue since the tool released so you should be good if the first update went through lol.

the APIM update taking the longest is pretty typical as well, I updated mine on Thursday and it took about 3 hours for it, and 1 for the GWM. Sync updates have always been ridiculously long 😅

Also, FDRS can be finicky with programming at times, my own experience with programming of modules had me questioning how well OTAs would be implemented, but for all the server issues I’ve seen over the years,OTAs on a general rule seem to work pretty well lol

Just a word of caution about using a charger instead of a regulated power supply. Chargers often tend to cycle themselves as ON then OFF when reaching a particular battery voltage. This can cause saggy/spiky voltages on the line. Some of the components in the modules may get a bit testy when seeing these sags and spikes. I blew up a 40A battery charger on my first attempt, even though I had a full-size car battery in parallel with the charger. Scrambling to put more batteries in parallel and a couple of smaller chargers was no fun doing an APIM update. 😱🐩

I can’t imagine why any Mach E owner would or should have to go through all this. It’s not right. Shame on your dealer for not helping you. I would sell a car before going through all that.

Completely off topic, but those stripes on the back of your car look pretty sweet - care to post about it?

Not sure if this is the same thing but i asked my ford dealership to give me every update when i dropped it off for my first "tune up" at 15k miles.

They said they could only do it for the items in the car that i had complained had a problem like the charger that caused my car to overheat and the rest I would have to pay out of pocket for.

I'm no rich man but he said it would start at $150. That number sounds cheaper than having to figure all of this out. I would just really like to have my car be able to fast charge until 90%.

FYI Ford, this BS you have us going through is why I have already decided my next car will be a Tesla. Ford just doesn't have their crap together yet, and with this crappy dealership model may never be able to.

I guess it would cost a lot more than $150 to get the updates applied if it takes 5-6 hours to do. Also, you would have to pay again and again to keep the car updated. But yeah, it sucks...

Don't stress about the 12v battery when doing APIM/GWM/TCU. They're all done with the vehicle on, so the battery will be maintained.
Is that the case for all updates done using a usb drive?

Things don't start to get interesting until you're below 10v....

Not sure what moron was like "hey, when doing updates, let's make the 12v powered HV battery coolant pump run full bore!"

You need about 25 amps of power to do the updates.

Yes, when the USB drive is inserted the car is in a “ready to drive” state so a charger isn’t required for that portion of programming. However for the times that it is “Ignition on, NOT ready to drive “ you definitely would want it on a charger.
