I bought a 3 year old i3 for $32,000 off of sticker. They do not hold their value at all.

The rear door issue is funny. We call it the "awkward door triangle". If you get out and somebody gets out of the back, you are stuck in a weird triangle of doors. Luckily, I can count the number of times I had friends in the backseat on 1 hand.
Glad you saw the humor in the door situation. I definitely was not dissing the i3. I liked everything about it except the sticker price when new as I really thought I needed the REX model. The i3 became really appealing when I started seeing the used ones for affordable prices and then I became obsessed with finding one with a favorable model year battery Ah update.\

2005 Prius, 2012 Prius Plug-in which I am still driving. Expecting the Mach-e to be my next car although my wife suggested I get an ElectraMechanica Solo and replace her Escape with a Mach-e.

Mine is more of a Prius story...:) Toyota will be a year too late with their first true EV's (2022) so I bought my first Ford now rather then wait to see what they come up with.

My first electrified car is my present 2014 Fusion Hybrid ( I never liked the Prius or any foreign hybrid). There are few BEVs available here, and only BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf were the first offers ( I don't like any foreign EV). In 2015 one of the GM dealers began sellling the second generation Chevy Volt and later the Bolt EV. All of these are small for my need so I went for the Fusion Hybrid in 2015. Now I see some Teslas but there is no service shop for them, and I find them ugly and expensive (shipping adds a few thousands to the factory prices).

I am waiting for the first Ford dealer to get a Mustang Mach-E before deciding, and next year I expect to see more Ford and GM EVs at their respective dealers, including the 2022 Cadillac Lyriq. I have a 16 kW JuiceBox Level 2 EVSE built from a kit, installed, and ready since 2015. I could not find a Fusion Energi so I have just the Hybrid.

Edit: I found a local paper ad where a used car site is selling a red 2020 Tesla Model 3 for $55,997. If you Tesla owners still see the Model 3 as "cheap" , then how do you explain this price? See the ad in Spanish in the attached image, and search for the bottom right corner.

I didn't get to do as much tinkering, other than when I added the Enginer Pack to my Prius. Looking forward to exploring the links you shared after work is done for the day.
building my two EVs has been a ton of fun, and educational to boot. Trying to be safe and keep costs down, and end up with something drivable is quite a challenge. I am a big believer in the KISS design, and did not even try to include 'fancy' stuff like air conditioning, power steering, or any advanced battery monitoring/auto-balancing. My EVs are totally 'manual' DC motor/controller to keep them simple and inexpensive as possible.

My path was quite different.....

2008 - converted my first ICE to all-electric, a 1997 Suzuki Swift. Started life with (cheap) golf cart batteries... it worked but was pretty tough on the suspension, hard to brake, and not exaaaaaactly 'perky' accelleration along with a 35 mile range. Big upgrade to Lithium (LiFePO4) made it drive like a real car and upped the range to about 50 miles.

the whole process is documented:

2012 - I got tired of everybody saying the eSwift was ugly, so I found a partially converted Miata, bought it for pretty cheap.... pulled it apart and re-built to fix a few design flaws and upgrade to LFP to get the 50 mile range I needed around town daily driver

2021 - the MME caught my eye as a finally affordable, fun, 200+mi range EV so I can get ride of my regular ICE I've used for road trips and work days over 50 miles. My MME *should* be delivered by the end of Feb, and I'll start a new chapter... but probably still hang onto the eMiata
I like this, good topic. A+. All you all that have been on the BEV EV buying this an enjoyable to read about.
