Good Morning everyone,

I picked up my Mach E FE yesterday. I purchased it from a dealer since the one I ordered would not be built until May 31st. (I received an email telling me this, this morning. But, I already had a good idea that would be the timeline.) The drive home was 290 miles and the temp at starting point was a balmy 21 F. (Tongue planted firmly in cheek) When I left the dealership, the car was fully charged and had a range of 200 miles. I did perform a reset of the driving history before I left.

I noticed a little vibration rattle up near the drivers sun shade. I'll have to track that down or have the dealership do it.

The cars handling was quite good. Steering is very responsive no matter what driving mode you are in. Roads were mostly bare and wet but some places in the pass still had ice patches. For the trip home, I kept it mostly in Whisper mode to get as much range with it as I could. I passed one car on the first leg of the trip. When I started the pass I was doing 50mph. I pushed the accelerator down about 3/4 and it kinda took me off guard. Even not all the way down it literally pinned me back into my seat.

Low beam headlights were not as illuminating as I thought they should be. Brights were more than enough to do the job. Auto light sensing for brights and dim worked very well.

Climate control was easy to understand and manage. While turning off climate control and using the heated seats and steering wheel would have given me some more range but since I knew I had enough to get to my charging station I did not turn climate control off.

Switching back and forth between Sync Navigation and Carplay for music was seamless and I had no issues at all.

I used the Mach E SYNC 4 navigation system on the way home instead of Carplay Apps. It brought up the charger locations I would need since I would not have enough range to make it home on a single charge. The choice was easy as there was only 1 charging station on my route.

And now a few words about charging. I stopped at the Electrify America station as planned. Temp at this location was 28 F. I plugged the charger into the car and it was ready to charge. However, it did not recognize my Ford Wallet so I had to pay with my CC. And now about time to charge.

When I arrived at the charging station I was down to 14% battery charge and had about 12 miles of range left. Once I started charging I was only getting 32kw per hour. Since the temps were cold, I calculated I would need to get to 65% or 130 miles to leave me a good buffer to make it home. This took a whopping 96 minutes to accomplish. Had the system provided the "up to" 150kw that it should have, I should have been back on the road within 30 minutes. The sticker on the charger at the station stated it could provide up to 350kw charging rate. I know this has been an ongoing issue with Electrify America with other EV's and users. So, if anyone has a trick to get the charging rates faster, I'm all ears.

Once home I plugged the car into my wall charger and it started charging right away. I did this at 9:45 last night and it finished to a full charge at 9:21 this morning. So the estimate of about 12 hours was spot on. I arrived at home with about 18% charge left.

I did have one person at the charging station, which was co-located at a Taco Bell ask me what kinda car I was driving as he had not seen anything like it.

Overall, my first impressions are good. The car performed exactly as I thought it would, range was what I expected at the temps I was in. And, the ride was comfortable and performance was superb. The only shortcoming was the time to charge, which absolutely needs to improve.

I wonder if EA is purposefully throttling charging rates. Honestly I would think this is a regulatory issue. Advertising 350Kwh and delivering 32kwh even in cold weather seems suspect to me. After all of these reports, sure seems like EA is running a shoddy business.

Can I ask which EA station that was? I’ll be taking many trips around the state!

It was the one in Ellensburg, WA. co-located at the Taco Bell. It's the only charging station between the pass and WA SR 26.

That would be really stupid on their part, and I'm not sure what they would gain by underdelivering by so much. I seriously doubt there is anything nefarious going on; it's far more likely that either the car or charger are overcompensating for the extreme cold. That or there are software/compatibility errors on the chargers, the car, or both.

I've worked as a software engineer in Telco and broadcast TV for over 20 years, and I can tell you specs are never specific enough and engineers constantly interpret things differently.

Can’t wait to test EA vs others. EA always sounds good bc of the 150 kWh but sounds like it rarely delivers anywhere close.

I highly doubt this is an EA issue. Audi E-Tron gets 150. Porsche gets 270. This particular charger may have been at fault, but I still think the underlying issue is Ford. You can't expect EA to change their software for every type of car. They put out their specs and now Ford has to conform to them. Which I fully expect them to.

And expect slow charging speeds in the cold until Ford starts to precondition the battery.

So how much was your real world range? How much were you able to drive before it died?

The car never "died". I had 200 miles of range when I started the trip and when I got to a charger I had about 12 miles of range left. That leg of the trip was 178 miles so it was spot on estimated range.

That charger is always slow. I showed up there in perfect conditions and got the same speed.
Did you try any other plugs at the EA Taco Bell?

No, but I wish I had. I was just so tired I didn't want to be bothered with trying another one. So I just let it charge until I had enough to get going.

It was a very long day.

You missed part of the review. How was the Taco Bell food?

Yeah, I think it was on here that someone got like 95kWh on a random charger and much lower on an EA one.
