I agree with what others are saying about the ER for your situation in Alaska. I have a SR AWD that I am very happy with, but I don’t have a 70 mile roundtrip commute and live in a warm place.

You want a decent range buffer too in order to be comfortable, you don’t want to have to make sure you are leaving with 100% charge every day in the winter and ending your day with 10% charge.

The battery will also slightly degrade over time, so this would become a greater issue as the years go by.

Assuming your 70 miles is spent mostly at highway speeds, you also won’t be setting any range records.

I think the ER battery would make a meaningful difference based on where you live and how much you need to drive each day.

I know, and I appreciate the discussion. I think we’re kinda making the same point. You called it “insurance” and I called it “just in case”, but the point is the same. How reasonable the cost of that insurance is is the real question that the OP will need to answer, and our opinions can‘t really answer that for him, unfortunately.
I‘ve been excited for this car for quite awhile and it’s fun to come here and read all the conversations.
Before the MME I never really considered I would own an EV. I feel very fortunate to be able to experience this all.
If it wasn’t for this forum I would have bailed on it in December when the car didn’t show up.

Yeah I know what you mean, thanks for adding too.
Also, FWIW I typically own cars 2.5-3 years or so.
Something like a buy high sell low type of program I run.
I‘m thinking if only a handful end up in Alaska in that time it may be easier to offload an Extended range.
And I have never “managed” my cabin. It would be nice to have the ER just for range loss and anxiety.

SR build date 11/13/20, went straight to Argentine ramp (1/28) and on to AK.

ER build date 11/28, went onto Kanas and then back to the factor? That’s what the dealer said at least and I never witnessed a speedway or anything in palsapp. Now says Argentine Ramp but pending.

From what I see from Canadian owners of the SR versions, they are getting about 200km in the coldest weather. And Alaska is colder than most of Canada.

If you only have 120v at work, you will need the ER just to make the round trip (140 miles). L2 charging significantly changes the equation since you can recharge and keep your battery conditioned at work.

We test drove an extended AWD before taking delivery of our car and can’t say I notice a big difference in acceleration. It was a couple days apart tho and it wasn’t the main thing we were paying attention to

Personally, I would hold out for the ER, especially in Alaska. Our AWD SR estimates about 130 miles on full charge in this current Michigan weather. We haven’t tested it down to 0 but that seems to line up with the reported 2.0ish miles/kWh we see on the trip screen

We took it around town to show it to some fam the first day we got it, then ran out to pick up dinner after. On the way home we were fiddling with the climate control to reduce power and ended up a bit below 25% when we parked it. It would’ve been fine without messing with anything but it was new and we were a bit anxious. The extra 5k for the bigger battery would’ve made all that a lot more comfortable

Right.
Sorry for the confusion, my commute is 35 miles one way. 70 round trip.
The 35 miles is roughly 33 miles highway driving.

I have been meaning to research this, but, with parking outside at work and plugged into 120V, will I still be able to preheat the cabin and what not before I leave?

Ok. So for 70 miles you will be fine in terms of range. Even with 60% range degradation you will manage.

As for pre heating and battery conditioning under 120v, it will remain to be determined. I don't know how Ford handles it.

For my car (Volt), 120v is NOT enough to full preheat and condition teh battery and it will draw battery power to heat the cabin. At 240v, it will fully condition without touching the battery.

Your issue will be if the battery gets cold soaked if it sits 8 hours in -40 weather. Note that a large battery will not solve this issue.

You will, but you will use some of the battery to do it, which will decrease your range.

Yeah, it’s definitely a concern I have. Finishing a 12 hour shift and heading to my $50K+ spaceship and it be dead or not functional. Meanwhile my shift partner giggles and offers a ride home in his 1992 buick. ? That‘ll be a good one for the breakroom tea time.

Thanks for taking the time to indulge my first world problems. ?

I’m sure the dealer wouldn’t even blink when I tell them I need my deposit back because I’m not buying it. They‘ll sell it yesterday. I just feel bad we’ve taken this journey together ?

Depends how well Ford insulates their battery. GM batteries can go a day or two unplugged before hitting cold soak in Alaska.

For reasons I will go into detail for if asked, ?, I have 23andMe’d and I may be selective but I like to claim my 13% Scandinavian and brush past much of my 50 some odd % British heritage.
Born and raised Alaska but I did play a soccer tournament in England in 2000 when I was on the junior USA team. ⚽
