I have looked all over and do not see how to "precondition" a battery except by charging it, setting a departure time while plugged in, or driving it. Is there another way to force the battery into precondition mode while plugged in at home?
The preconditioning we’re talking about is for preparing to DC fast charge, so it’s not something you would typically do while plugged in at home.

Thanks, That is what I was asking about, other than driving, how do you precondition a battery for DC fast charging? And how do you warm up your battery before driving on a cold day to extend your range?

I’d simply have Waze up in CarPlay to alert me to road hazards/etc
You mean road hazards like a state trooper with a speedgun? ?

Preconditioning while driving is something Ford's software will have to do; currently there is no way to do that. Rumor has it that the first OTA will include a way to precondition (ie warm) the battery when going to a DC fast charger.

To condition your battery at home you have to program in departure times; you can have up to 2 a day, but the car has to be plugged in for it to kick in. It is unclear if that will be changed too.

Thanks @timbop,

for the departure times, I am a little confused. Does the car precondition "prior" to your departure time and is smart enough to know how far in advance to do the job or does it "start" at your departure time. Once it does precondition, how long will it stay ready? In one version of the vehicle setup in Ford Pass, before our vehicles arrived, it gave you a departure time and a "turn off" time. That is no longer visible in any app or the in-car setup.

I believe manually doing a remote start will essentially do the same thing as having departure times do it automatically, no?

Do we know yet how long the pre conditioning takes?

Using the build-in GPS does not seem to pre-condition the battery. I did a test using a ODB reader and Car Scanner. I set the GPS to a DC fast charger, and the Battery temperature remained around 58 to 60F during the entire trip. Maybe I got the wrong PID for the temperature.

As the original post said, this is just a potential future update (in regards to pre-conditioning while on a longer road trip that adds charging stops to the route):
How are people handling (or going to handle) nav software, especially with the potential OTA upcoming for preconditioning the battery for charging?

Understood, and I agree with you.

I’m hopeful the announced Apple/Ford partnership for EV mapping will allow for integration into the Ford software for preconditioning... but this seems highly optimistic.
iOS 14.5's Maps adds features for EVs, but I doubt that battery precon is going to be baked into it.

Heating up the battery before you get to a DCFC station so that it can charge at a high rate right away. Cold batteries charge slowly.
So to revive this thread now that it's getting cold out again...there's still no way to pre-condition the battery on a road trip ahead of arriving at a DCFC?

Recently watched a Taycan review and that car gets its battery up to like 90 degrees ahead of DCFC...pretty impressive. And the curve on the Taycan is insane, the E-tron too. Glad Ford is going to update ours... *in the future*.

I had never seen this thread; it's interesting.

Reading it though now makes perfect sense to me why the manual says not to use the heat in the car for a while when you're DC fast charging. It needs the heat for the batteries after you plug in to get them up to spec.

well, yes and no. The idea is to get the battery to an optimal temperature. Uding an OBD reader you could get the thermal state if the battery (I think, I don’t have an MMe yet). If it is below optimal state you could drive a little harder, use more aggressive regen, use the HVAC hard and heavy, turn on all sorts of accessories.

Of course, I can see it now: People doing 0-60 runs headed to their EA charger at the Wal-Mart parking lot with their windows down, heat turned on ful blast, stereos at 100%, high beams on… ?

So you could drive like a maniac in the last 2 miles to the DC fast charger to get that battery hot..... Just kidding.
