As I have to park me MME in the driveway, the mobile chargers cable is just a foot too short! Is it advisable to use an extension, if so what type should I get? Thanks

thanks, i'm just using it on 120v right now with the mobile charger, until i can get an electrician in to add a NEMA outlet. I have a Chargepoint Homeflex waiting for it... BTW, any concerns about doing charging in the rain?

I specifically went with a GrizzlE because the cost and it can be ordered with a 24ft cable. Nema outlet still required. Now I do not have to back in park as I did with the shorter cable Ford charger.

I charge in the rain all the time, even at work we have the chargers outside in the elements with no issues.
On the extension cord 12ga only and no more then 25 FT. When longer the cord ends can melt after a while otherwise due to the high amps due from the drop off.

best not to but if you have to etc.

On 120 just use an extension cord rated for 15A, unless you have a 20A type outlet, then you need a 20A one. I wouldn’t expose the connection between extension cord to mobile charger to moisture but the car end is fine... the contacts are recessed pretty deep and the mobile charger will refuse to charge if there is a fault.

The extension cord needs to be sized for the load, not the receptacle. A 15A extension cord is adequate. If the mobile charger required a 20A receptacle, it would have a NEMA 5-20 plug end:

Be careful when using a cord on a reel. The instructions will tell you to completely unroll it, especially when using near its max rating. Otherwise it can overheat. Also make sure its UL listed.
ANd I would not use a cord any longer than absolutely necessary. If a 15' will reach, don't use a 25'.

Shortest is best as always and avoid cheap extension cords

Side question: if you have a NEMA 14-50 outlet, what is the benefit gained by using a Chargepoint or Grizzl-E esve over using the Ford mobile charger?

also, how long is the charger? I’m installing a NEMA plug near the door of the garage so that I can charge the car either in the garage, or just outside it.

If you want to keep your mobile charger in the car for traveling or charging away from home for any reason, you would have to roll up the mobile charger and store in the trunk each time you left home. Then get it back out when you returned. Having a home-installed EVSE eliminates that - just unplug and go.

If your a stats nerd and want a smart charger with finer controls.

The included charger is 7.6kW 32A, you can get up to 40A using the NEMA 14-50.

Above that goes hard wired.

Yup. IIRC the 20A receptacles are shaped differently to prevent people for plugging in a lower rated cable. I’m just saying if you happen to have a 20A receptacle you need to use that cable- it wouldn’t mate well with the mobile charger end though.
The manual says not to charge in “severe rain, snow, or electrical storm” but light rain should be fine. Side note, I thought Mach E was > Lightning according to Ford Marketing... ?
I think the intent is that water splashing into the charge port prior to plugging in the charger would be bad, when plugged in it is a fairly tight seal.

Not exactly. A standard NEMA 5-20 receptacle (20A rated) will accept both 15 and 20A plugs thanks to having both a vertical and horizontal slot on the neutral.
It's the other way around - to prevent 20A appliances from being plugged into a 15A-only receptacle.
