I answered some other questions...

and got my trade-in appraisal:

I did a CarMax appraisal online (I looked at Carvana and Vroom but I think they both wanted me to jump through extra hoops first? I forget now) and it was within a few hundred dollars, so I believe this was a fair offer. I declined at this point though because as I said I wasn't really doing it - I just love all of you enough to show it :)

anyway I moved on to Accessories... I suspect many will be curious about the dashcam option so here's the details on that one:

Can you elaborate a little on what happened when you brought your trade in? Did the dealer confirm the condition you listed through the online checkout or did they just process your trade as listed?

Thanks!

I didn't actually go through with the trade-in because I wasn't intending to.

However, another forum member had a good result on another thread:

Trade-In - I had a quote from Carvana ready just in case the dealer tried to short change me on the trade. The Ford check-out process provided an estimate for my trade-in that was only $300 less than Carvana. The dealer actually came in slightly more than Carvana. Their used car lot isn't as full as it normally looks to me. My trade had also gone up in value over the last 4-6 months by about $3K based on my Carvana quotes from last year. Nice surprise.

Am I the only one that didn’t have the option for online checkout? I wonder if dealers can proactively opt out? Or maybe it’s not allowed in some states?

the day I did it was the first or second day or something that it was available so if your delivery was before that, it didn't exist yet. I forget when you got yours but I think it was very close to that?

Mine was delivered to the dealer on 3/25 and I bought it on 3/26. I think people were reporting availability of the online system the week before that.

Fun fact, when I was going through the trade in process, I hit an error. Apparently my car is too rare/exotic. It's a 2017 Audi A4.

I was sent the email from Ford that my car had been delivered and to proceed to the online process. I did and I plan to trade in my car if their price was decent. I had also used autotrader and Carvana as a comparison. The online trade in price was very decent and because of the tax savings came in at about what Carvana was offering. So I submitted to my dealer the whole process. My salesman the next day sent me email saying my a car had arrived. I told him about the online process Ford told me to do and that I had submitted it with the trade in value. He sent me a note back, saying great that Ford was doing this but he would have to evaluate my trade in himself. "Great but Ford doesn't write the checks". I can't find it in the forum, but does the dealer have to honor this online process and trade in value? I know I saw something about that but can't find it. I have a quote from Carvana that covers the cost of the additional taxes so if they don't I will do that. But what is the dealer's obligation since I followed the Ford process.

I don't know - good question for @hybrid2bev .

I'd say though your dealer is already playing games and just have Carvana cut the check.

The reality is in today's used car market, the dealer needs your used car way, way more than you need them to buy it from you.

The dealer is supposed to validate that the trade in vehicle condition and mileage etc. matches the inputs you provided during the online checkout. If it does match then my understanding was that the trade in price was guaranteed by Ford.

I did not see in the whole thread if you mention if the California point of purchase rebate was applied or not, ($1500). If I missed it- sorry.

I really hope this is the case but worry that Ford really can't force dealers to do anything because they are independent businesses that can rally together to push back against Ford for anything that will cut into their profits such as automatically accepting a fair trade-in value.

That’s the thing with the guarantee. My understanding is that Ford is telling the dealer that they will be compensated if the auction price comes in lower, so the dealer won’t lose money on the deal.

Boy is my face red. I, for some reason, thought you were in California. I mean who in Ohio wold ever buy a Mach E. It just goes to show that the car has appeal across the country. Go figure. :)
