Let's not forget the other key advantages of the proposed infrastructure stimulus:
  • Puts a buttload of money into highway, bridge, and tunnel repair, not to mention more money for state/county/local roads, which in many places are in terrible shape.
  • Increases investment in technology that will help in the transition to assisted driving and autonomous driving. This will likely include more investment in smart lane markings and other embedded hardware that will make it easier for cars to drive themselves and communicate with a central traffic system (especially on the highways).
  • Additional investments in rail should help to encourage a shift of freight from the highways to rail (where more of our freight should be anyway...much less wear and tear on the roads)
Beyond the potential EV credit extension, the fact that we'll once again have a transportation infrastructure to be proud of is the most exciting part of this...in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a civil engineer and I'm a bit biased :)

yup.

"remember how terrible the TVA and WPA were? what a waste of money those were!" said no one, ever.
I did.

Don’t bother yelling at me. I won’t respond but I couldn’t let that statement go by.

Random aside because of this whole American discussion. In lots of Latin American countries, they refuse to refer to people from the USA as Americans. They see the term 'American' as referring to people from the continent like how people from both France and Italy are European.

In those Latin American countries, what Americans would refer to as 'Americans' are basically called 'United States-ian' or Estadounidense in Spanish. Go figure.

... I can't drive 2 blocks without seeing a dozen freaking Teslas lol
There are a zillion Teslas on my street and only 2 Fusion Energis. Both of the Fords are parked in my driveway

You're not allowed to own an EV and be a reupblican. That's like a fact
I used to participate on a technical forum for a specific niche. I left when Trump showed up because it went off the rails. There was a guy from Michigan, and he swore we'd never have electric cars, that hybrids sucked, etc. He was a hard-core R.

Drove me crazy, not so much on EV's, but every innovation met the same answer if it didn't fit his world view. I remember my parents taking me to the Bay Area and you couldn't see 5 miles, much less across it like you can almost every day now. That happened because things changed.

That totally slipped my mind that the Mach-E is built in Mexico!.. I read "American Made EV's" and immediately thought Ford=American Made.

Good catch!
There will be some way that will get sorted out. At this point I'm not sure what gets made here and what gets made somewhere else, which is kind of the case with most things these days. I think the Asian's build more cars here than we do at this point.

Depending on where you live, kinda shows you how many BEV you might see in your daily drive. Yet to see another Mache still where I live. Point taken the mache will turn heads for a while. Just not enough of them on the road by the end of the year.

hmm
I wonder how many Tesla's there are on the road in California per Supercharger, and how that compares to how many CCS EVs there are per CCS plug... I've never had a line at a DCFC.

Seems to me that Total EVs/100K vehicles is off by a factor of 10 (should be about 200)

Wow, $10000? o_O That sounds a bit too much to me. Where is all the money coming from? More national debt?
The govt. may as well send people their pay checks. No one goes to work. Less traffic congestion. Fewer accidents. Much less pollution. Triple win!

Some incentive for new tech to promote it is ok. But $10000 indefinitely, seems too much to me.

I'm surprised it took five pages for this thread to get derailed
I agree. It never should have been posted in the first place. The bill the OP references is a horrendous waste of our earnings, driving up the national debt to unsustainable levels, and does nothing to help those who cannot afford to buy a Mach-E. You know what will help them? Free market economics and a government that is small and not wasting the future earnings of my children.

Not surprisingly, this thread has morphed into a snapshot of our society. Lots of noise from two opposing viewpoints, no listening or attempts at dialogue - just anger.

I've been trying to research this in the context of the USMCA trade agreement. I haven't had much luck finding anything specific, but I suspect that all vehicles made in North America might qualify. USMCA may prohibit differential tax treatment for goods made in member countries.

The article states "American-made EVs" in paragraph 5. It does not specifically say "U.S.-made". That's also the wording of the Biden press release. I realize that when most people say "America", they mean the USA, but there is a troubling lack of specificity in that.
Wording is very important. "Made in America" and "Made in USA" could arguably be different. "Made in USA" is based on a set of FTC rules. Not sure if "Made in America" is required to follow the same set of rules. Interesting none the less.
