Anyone made the San Diego -> Sacramento I5 run yet?

I am planning to drive up to Sacramento from San Diego (and back again) and was wondering if anyone else has done this recently in a Mach E? Looking at the charging stops it seems like it may not even be possible on I5 given the Panoche Shell closure. A bit surprising this run is so dependent on a single charging station that has been down for weeks. The alternative is the somewhat slower 99 route, which isn't too bad but still adds about an hour to the trip. Or are there other ways of doing I5 I am missing? Harris Ranch has some public chargers, but they top out at 50kw which makes 99 faster. I plan to have my wife and mother-in-law along for the ride, so I don't want to make this too much of an "adventure" (like pushing the car to 0% SoC and seeing how many miles I can squeak out at 25mph and my hazards on in the shoulder).

Premium rwd extended range.

I'm presuming the distance from the charger in Bakersfield on I-5 up to the Patterson Walmart charger a bit south of Tracy is outside the range of either possibility or comfort? Too lazy to look it up.

Can't answer your question exactly, sorry, but we're planning a San Diego to San Francisco round trip via Santa Barbara and A Better Route Planner has worked well for our planning. It also has a CarPlay app now but I haven't tested it yet . Also, I bought a TeslaTap Mini 60 so we can charge at Tesla destination chargers.

It looks like it, at least from A Better Route Planner. If I charge to 80% at Bakersfield, I would be at 0% when I got to the Walmart which is a bit too adventurous for me. That Bakersfield stop is great, but I'd really like something else on the route before Patterson.

Too bad Harris Ranch is 50kWh. That's more than a bit surprising to me honestly. It'd be a perfect stop. Grab a bite while the car is charging.

Yeah, I was using ABRP. It is still routing me to the out of service Shell, when I tell it to avoid that then it is a trip up the 99 instead. So when you see grey boxes in ABRP, it's a good idea to double check! It is a great service - I haven't paid for it yet, but it's nice enough I may pay just to keep them in business.

And good tip on the Tesla tap! I had forgotten about that. Will probably come in handy during the visit.

I guess they want me to have a long sit down meal :) Hmm... just checking plug share, it says 6 50kw charges, but a comment says "150 kW charger open and working." So maybe that is an option!

I don’t know how much of a difference this will make, but try telling the mother in law she can’t speak while on the road because doing so will reduce the vehicle’s range as a result of increased climate needs.

You might be able to charge on a 50kWh during lunch (if necessary, presuming no 150 kWh available) and get enough of a charge to get to Patterson comfortably, or somewhere else north.

Doing all this from memory. Haven't lived in California for well over a decade, though I've driven both 99 and I5 recently (enough)

I'm thinking this would not be helpful in maintaining domestic tranquility. ?

I could definitely make it using the 50, but travel time would be a bit longer than 99. On the other hand, if they really *do* have 150s then it would be faster, and if they don't I would still make it with the 50s. I may also keep an eye on the Panoche Shell, it is supposed to be back in operation later this month/early May in which case I could take I5 and try Harris to see if they really have 150s. Wife and mom-in-law prefer more frequent short stops to less frequent long ones, which would fit well with 150s at Harris.

And I have to say, this is all *so* much better than the last time I looked at it about 5 years ago. Back then there was absolutely no way to make the trip in a reasonable amount of time in a non-Tesla EV.

I'd imagine the speed of the chargers at Harris Ranch was a tactic to get people to sit down and eat ? Which, frankly you should be doing on such a long drive - if I recall correctly it's actually the longest possible intrastate trip between major metro areas in the US at 500 miles (SF to SD is pretty close).

So I'd definitely take i5 and grab a bite to eat/stretch the legs at Harris Ranch. Even if your only getting 42kw charge rates you'll get about 30kwh added in 45 minutes. Plenty of juice to get to Patterson, and possibly all the way to your destination depending on which part of Sacramento. Good luck!

Yeah, normally I would do that, but we are specifically taking this trip and going via car to avoid prolonged time in enclosed spaces (I won't go into details to avoid having this thread shut down due to "political" discussions) so stopping for a long meal isn't really an option. Maybe next trip - I have stopped at Harris for lunch in the past., sure beats Hungry Valley...

I wonder if we could start a thread to warn folks about certain chargers not working as listed. Or are they already out there? I had a spot of bad luck on San Luis Obispo with several EA chargers, and a 50 kw charger at the train station in Arroyo Grande.
