Florida's primary power company is asking regulators to allow it into the vehicle charging business. I am not sure if this is a good thing or not?

FPL pitches vehicle charging proposal
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (News Service of Florida) --- Pointing to “range anxiety” as an obstacle to motorists driving electric vehicles, Florida Power & Light is asking regulators to approve a proposal that could lead to more vehicle-charging stations in the state. See the full story:

Competition is always good , especially since FPL's rate would be in line with Tesla and thus much lower then EA:
Part of the proposal would set a price of 30 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity sold to motorists at charging stations that would be operated by FPL.

I don't know why it wouldn't be a good thing? They make, distribute, and sell electricity so it seems like EV chargers are just more of the same.

The city of Seattle owns its own hydro power plants and has its own DCFC stations.

Considering the fact that FP&L has made sure Florida is the state in last place for rooftop solar power, I'll bet they try their heavy-handed lobbying to become a near monopoly, not a new competitor. I trust FP&L as far as I can throw them.

ChasingCoral, I totally agree with you! Greed will raise it's ugly head whenever they think they can pull it off without accountability.

Most EV owners in Florida will not need any public chrgers, and charge at home overnight . I see only the out-of-state tourists using those chargers. During all my visits to Florida (mostly Fort Lauderdale) I have seeen very few electric vehicles (just one Chevy Volt). Tesla has their shop in Dania Beach (which I visited), but you see very few of their cars on Florida roads.

Public chargers are needed all over. and that includes all over Florida. What if you live in Tampa and want to drive your kid to UofM. You won’t make it down, much less back. I can’t go to the Atlantic shore and return here to DC because of the dirth of charging infrastructure.

Yes, the typical user of a DCFC charger is someone traveling from elsewhere.

I hear ya. You do have a couple of 50 kW chargers in Ocean City, one in Queenstown, and more in Annapolis, after that it's 25 kW DCFCs and then L2s. Our trip from Silver Spring to Blackwater in the Leaf was a misadventure in charging and broken chargers.
