Last month we drove up the highest paved road in North America. That's Mount Evans Scenic Byway in Colorado if you didn't know. My goal was to see how much battery we would use going up and then how much we would regen when coming down.

The drive up was spectacular! It is a narrow road with views for miles and miles, but no guardrails. Of course, one of the benefits of an EV is that you don't lose horsepower at elevation like you do in an ICE vehicle.

Going back down, we were getting a lot of regen. It was really cool seeing the range and battery percentage go up as we went down the mountain.

Unfortunately, we hit a snag on the decent. The car threw a One Pedal Mode fault and then eventually a bunch of others. It was a nerve racking time getting back home! But... in the end, Ford analyzed the car and did a bunch of updates. Car checks out and we have since driven 2,400 miles with some milder descents with no issues at all.

Here's the whole long video. (If you want to just skip the the problems, it is just past the 28:30 mark.)

I thank you for your encounters with problems and coming out ok. I have read too many reviews and because I’m not the most tech savvy person here, I just don’t think I’m ready to buy a MME right now. I also follow Chill & EV and they had multiple issues with one being the charge port wouldn’t close. Thank you??

Hi Patrick & Liv,
I watched this and all your vblogs before deciding to order my Mach E. I ordered it today, GT in Grabber Blue. Now the wait. In the meantime I will attempt to educate myself as much as possible about electric vehicles, the Mach E, charging it and how to maintain it.

Awesome!!! Congrats on your new order! We're still learning about EVs and all the stuff that goes along with it and can't wait to share more in future videos. ?

Patrick, any follow up thoughts on what happened? Does Ford think it was an overheating issue? If so, is it overheating the battery or is it overheating the motors? If not, is it a fault in the software of some sort?

Glad you and Liv were able to make it home.

In the end, I was told that the software updates applied would prevent it from happening again. I don't know anything more than that. I know they tested the Mach-E coming down from Pikes Peak because one of their engineers posted about it long ago. I'm guessing that it was just a software bug. I'm hoping to test it out again in the next month.

What is the recommended workaround until a fix is released? I saw someone suggest neutral and use the brakes? That sounds like a bad idea for the brakes?

If you look at the brakes, they are pretty clearly sized to handle a vehicle this size/weight without the assistance of the regenerative braking. This makes sense from a safety perspective, as it would be very bad if there We’re stories of cars slamming into things when regen cut out.

No vehicle has brakes that are sized to handle going down Mt Evans riding the brakes the whole way. Maybe F1 cars.

If you use the brakes PROPERLY, I disagree.

I haven't seen anyone report a problem doing normal highway passes like I-70 or I-80 through Sierras. Anyone putting their car in neutral on those roads is probably an idiot that's wasting their brake pads and regen, but they're probably not going to boil their brake fluid.

If you ARE going to go down Pike's Peak or Mt Evans or similar, I'd leave it in drive, go slowly, and pull over periodically to let things cool, if possible.

When's the last time you drove Mt Evans? What is your definition of properly?
I’ve not driven Mt Evans. That doesn’t mean I don’t know what I’m talking about. Most people drag their brakes all the way down a decline rather than actually scrubbing off some speed then letting engine braking keep the car from accelerating too quickly while the brakes get a chance to cool down some before they get hit hard to scrub speed off again. Yes, I know we don’t have engine braking on these cars.
Now, go look at the size of the rotors on the Mach-E. They are huge for a car this size, because of the weight. I would attempt any public road in a Mach-E without fear of not having brakes.
