I mean, it seems as a whole the car review community has deemed the ID.4 a "miss" by VW.

This review doesn't go that far. They liked the VW, just not as much as the MME.
Some of the complaints are very subjective. Take the controls/buttons for instance. Just because the reviewers don't like them doesn't mean consumers won't. My Infiniti QX50 is a perfect example. The infotainment screens and controls are widely panned by the automotive press. I like them just fine. The same is said about the Acura RDX, which we shopped against the QX50. Reviewers had a hard time figuring out the touch pad controller. It worked well for my wife and me. ?‍♂ ;)

We tested the ID4 and thought;
1. It felt like the normal ICE model 'converted' to EV
2. Looks were boring
3. Hardly any re-gen braking
4. Drive selector is weird, probably easier in the LHD but for RHD it's the wrong side ;-)
Now had my MME for 2 months, totally love it and for me it's better than the others we test drove
Polestar 2, ID4, I-Pace. the Kia EV6 might be better than those but no test drives available until September earliest in the UK and the pre production model finish we looked at wasn't a good example.

I’ve seen a couple of these up close while DC charging! One guy even said that he would have bought a MME if he didn’t have to wait so long to get one! The range would be the biggest down side for me!

I had their AWD trim reserved for about 2 days before I realized I really didn't want that car. The looks are boring (looks like a Rav4 to me) and the specs are just bland

Yeah, I have the Acura RDX with the touch pad controller, and I think it's great, yet every damned reviewer said it's too hard to figure out, too fiddly, etc. It's literally "plunk your finger down and the orange highlight appears."

I won't even look at the ID.4. I have had a lot of VWs in the past, and each one had massive problems of stuff that just shouldn't have been an issue. I was "this close" to swearing them off forever, and then DieselGate happened, and that completely pushed me over the edge. Incompetence I can get over. Outright intentional deceit, nope.

As a multiple VW owner, I feel personally attacked lol (I'm kidding)

To be fair though, VW weren't the only ones. They just got the most negative press over it. Volvo, Renault, Jeep, Hyundai, Citroen, Fiat were all wrapped up in the same thing in 2014. It was later found out in an ongoing investigation that BMW and Dahlmer-Chrysler (before they sold to Fiat) were also doing the same thing. GM and Nissan were caught in 2015.

There's a long standing history of it too. Even Ford in 1997 had to pay damages for cheating emissions standards on their Econoline vans. In 1973 several companies cheated emissions by lying about fuel enrichment to beat sensors.

BURN IT ALL DOWN.

No, I get it. I had a 1987 Wolfsburg Jetta that cost me more in repairs than it did in monthly payments. Then I had a Passat which had a major engine failure about 10,000 miles outside of warranty. Then I had a CC which was a SWEET car, except for a constant WUB-WUB-WUB from the poor wheel alignment issues that could never be fixed. I killed that one in a crash. When I went to replace it, I talked to my VERY WELL KNOWN service manager at that point and asked her about maintenance costs on one of the Touregs and she quietly pulled me aside and listed thousands of dollars of what to expect with it, and I'm like "NOPE" and went next door to Honda and bought an Accord Hybrid which has 150,000 miles on it and has needed nothing but oil changes. (Knock on wood.) My kid drives it now.

You're not wrong. I have a 73 Beetle currently rusting under a tarp that doesn't run (I have plans to bastardize it by cutting the roof off and making it a roadster) and my daily is a 2016 GTI that although has been flawless for me, the service costs are pretty shockingly high.

The review is pretty charitable to the ID.4, but the simple truth is, it’s not in the same league as the MME. But it’s about 10% cheaper. I’m guessing that savings isn’t too significant for most people at this price point.

If the sports version was more the standard then I would have seriously considered it.

I recently took a test drive in a neighbor's. It is not a bad car; its just very ICE-like, which I believe was the goal. It is basic EV transportation, but no verve, fun, soul...what ever.

Clearly though, there is a market for them; they also less expensive than MY and MME.

The good thing is that both the MME and the VW EV’s will and should improve going forward.
