It's not easy...or cheap.

I purchased a VCM3, which is what plugs between the laptop and the cars OBD port.
https://diagnoex.com/products/ford-...MItM-dx8Pi8gIVycLtCh3VOgOxEAAYASAAEgKgCfD_BwE

You also need a copy of GFDRS, the software for the laptop, with a license...also not cheap
https://www.fordtechservice.dealerc...ds/diagnosticsites/vcmdvd/mcs/idssoftware.asp

Finally you need a MotorCraft login to be able to use GFDRS.
https://www.motorcraftservice.com/User/Login

Once you have all that lot, you effectively have the same as what a dealer has.
At least a couple of us have ordered the U.S. equivalents with MotorCraftservice DIY accounts:
FORD ROTUNDA Estimated Ship Date 10-5-2021 VCM3 or VC3 with flight recorder

The original ship date was Sep 7, now October, probably another COVID / chip delay, not urgent on my part, looking forward to working with it. I'm good for a month or two more, but if the delays go much longer than that, I might cancel the order. They charge your card at day of order.

There is some irony in that folks are saying the VCM3 hardware transfer rate is slow compared to OTA updates, and that the OTA updates are expected to be more comprehensive someday in the future.

Still trying to understand what package to buy, seems to be FJDS/FDRS for Mach E (IDS being for older vehicles):

365 day IDS/FDRS Software License = $900.00 per license
30 day IDS/FDRS Software License = $300.00 per license
2 day IDS/FDRS Software License = $150.00 per license
365 day FJDS/FDRS Software License = $899.00 per license
30 day FJDS/FDRS Software License = $200.00 per license
2 day FJDS/FDRS Software License = $50.00 per license

I ordered a VCM 3 in March. They've pushed the date back monthly since then....I've been borrowing a buddies VCM since then. I've been waiting for about 6 months.

I purchased IDS/FDRS because I do have older Fords where IDS comes in handy. I can also update older Ford modules with UCDS (separate tool) so I don't need FJDS at all then. If you will never program cars pre 2018 (or even some 2019-2020) then you don't need IDS or FJDS. FDRS is the only application you need.

I called the company, OPUS IVS, Drew technologies, very nice folks. They confirmed this J2534 programing module works fine with Ford FDRS. With the bluetooth version, you can plug the main body into the OBD port in the car, and work from the home. I do not have a heated garage, and it gets very cold here in the winter, so I opted for the bluetooth version.

Mongoose-Plus J2534 OEM Bluetooth Wireless Vehicle Interface Cable - OEM Reprogramming and Diagnostics for Ford / Lincoln / Mercury

Called to cancel my VMC3 order. They say they need an okay from the distributor which takes a day or two, but I think it will probably cancel okay, especially where Sam says he's waiting since March.

Hats off to @generaltso! I am weary of some third part solutions, but I think this is going to work out fine. BTW, the regular Ford Mongoose unit delivered in one day, but the Bluetooth version arrives Saturday.

Let us know how it goes. I'd pick one up myself if it wasn't for that pesky software subscription.

One last note for now, the Drew tech guy said that for best Bluetooth range, to buy an OBD extender cable and set the Mongoose on the windshield. I ordered this extender:
ourantools OBD-2 Extension Cable Adapter Connector– OBD-II 16pin Male to Female Extender Cable with Nylon Material for Connecting Car Diagnostic Tool (1.5m/4.92ft)

I too have reservation about leasing the software, but I am just going to try it. Probably four or five two day costs would do the job, but I might just eat a year this first time, just be able to explore the system without thinking about a payment. Not sure yet on that one.

My Bluetooth Mongoose and extender cable arrived a day late, only a problem because I was not home. Most deliveries are left inside a regular outside door next to the garage door (local custom, especially in heavy snow), but Amazon just used a brown paper shipping envelope and left it out in the rain all day. I almost opened the package, but when I picked it up, about a cup of water drained from inside the mailer, so I just put the whole mess in a plastic bag and returned it.

When I went to reorder, the Bluetooth version was a week out and the latest MongoosePlus Ford2 with the regular USB connection to the computer was next day delivery. I took that as an omen, and gave up on Bluetooth, and also saved $200.

With work, I have only had time to collect the various parts, a Lenovo labor day and military discount Thinkpad (last year's model X1 extreme GEN 3), the 12V DC flash power supply, and the Mongoose.

Tonight I finally got to set up the Thinkpad, and install the Drew Tech. software for the Mongoose, and FJDS and FDRS, which can be installed without yet paying for a license. (The Drew instructions say to install both, even if you only plan to use FDRS).

Drew technologies has lots of support videos, pdf instruction sheets, and great technical support (I spoke with sales before buying it). On set up, FJDS/FDRS easily identified the Mongoose, so no issues there. Some of the DIY posts talk about no Bosch support, but easy access to DIY friendly Drew tech support, so that made my decision easier.

I will probably just buy a two day license over the weekend to try everything out. It looks like there may be some diagnostic information with PIDS, but not sure how useful that will be, or if it would cause me to take one year license. For module programming alone, the $50 two day license seems to make a lot of sense.

Will write more later, after I program a module or two.

Some of the older YouTube videos talk of half hour+ FJDS installation times, but with the Thinkpad i7 with SSD, nothing took more than several minutes.

Most generic flash programming instructions emphasize the importance of using a battery minder, either those industrial strength wheeled charger units, or a 12V flash programming power supply. No idea how important that is for MME (other than clearly don't let the 12V battery discharge). My dealer had nothing connected for the first four hours or so. I guess (?) if programming fails something would complain (as in an aborted or failed process). Ford only says to attach a charger (I think they probably assume a 100A to 200A dealer unit on wheels).

The past few days my car has been much quieter while charging on L2. I have done nothing different with the car and ambient temps are quite high still. Makes me wonder if an OTA has been pushed to my car.
???

What is your charging amperage set to?

It is 10-15 degrees cooler than a month or two ago...

32A. Which is 7.2kW at home and around 6.6kW at the office. It is the office where I noticed the car is quieter. Not sure about home because I am asleep when it charges. :)

Getting the L2 fan noise TSB reprogramming will also address several other current TSBs as the modules to be updated are the same.

What is this Sleep to which you refer? ?

I don't hear much noise during ~5.8kW charging even when the mercury is above 110. Not sure about 32@240 or 32@208 though. ??

Can't wait for the backlogged OTA updates to start rolling through in earnest, though. Well be nice.
