rethinking my practices, was curious the expert opinions of the forums…

I have a ChargePoint home charger.

Currently, I set the car to charge to 85% at any time when at home and I’ve got the ChargePoint set to charge 12a-8a based on electrical grid pricing.

this setup allows me to precondition if I leave early in the morning… but no other times of the day.

Would it be better to set the ChargePoint to allow charging any time and the car to charge 12a-8a? Would this allow using power when pre conditioning even outside the charging window?

thanks!

It's probably better to manage the schedule in the car, just so you have the option outside of the midnight to 8 am window if you want. If you leave after 8 am, then you would be preconditioning on shore power at the higher rates - unless you tell the car you're leaving at 8am and it preconditions prior to that. Of course it doesn't use much juice to precondition so that might not matter anyway.

Well I can just as easily update the ChargePoint to “charge now” than fighting with FordPass to do it… easier on CP

will the car pull power for pre conditioning even outside the charge window?

Yup manage charging from within the car and turn off the EVSE's schedule.

Yes regardless if the preconditionining is via schedule or if you simply remote start the car.

Set the schedule in the car - leave FordPass out of it!

I never trust the car. I'm have my charger set to not supply power in peak hours (mine is 11am - 7pm). By doing that, if the car or FordPass (or my utility company which can override things because I signed up and get paid) screws up the hours, I prevent that.

If we want to precondition, one click in my JuiceBox app and we're good.

OK, then why ask for opinions? I have a dumb charger and haven't had any issues overriding charging from the FP app.

If the charger will supply power at that time and it is plugged in, the car will pull shore power to precondition if you tell it to precondition outside the cheaper window. If you don't want it to do that, then don't tell it to.
