Inno Phantom 466 Roof Cargo Box + Seasucker Monkey Bar Roof Rack

Ford Mustang Mach-E Inno 466 Cargo Box + Seasucker Mounts + Seasucker Monkey Bar Roof Rack installed on Mach-E IMG-7982

While my truck is more suited to road-trips with lots of gear, wanted to make a go at taking the ME on this season’s holidays travel. As noted here, not many options for us for roof rack wise

Having seen this seasucker setup and cargobox (slimmer one albeit) on a rally and it holding up on a supercar for a week of absurd speeds, I was fairly confident it would meet our needs ? The recent recall on the glass roofs was also of some concern, though supposedly ‘not-applicable’ to my build. Tested the rack alone for a week, and a week now with the box as well. Quite impressed so far.

The Seasucker monkey bar setup utilizes a round 1.3” alum support bar mounted to 6” Vacuum mounts. The front using a pair of Dual cups up front and single pair out back. The support bar can be broken down into 24” sections, so makes this a quite portable setup.

Just the rack alone, wind noise was pretty bad. It was expected with round support bars, almost exhaust drone sounding. Trialed some foam pipe insulation to the bars, and noise is for the most part gone ?

Likely won’t get done for this trip, but ideal plan would be to fab a low profile fixed base to hardmount the box to, netting a much more flush to roof setup. Or considering using some spare Yakima Aerobar I have to use in the place of the roundbar. All that said, given the likley one use per year, the monkeybars as-is are likely fine.

Looked over a couple dozen different options, but given avail supply & size limitations I was pretty set on the the Thule Motion XT Large 16cu ft. That said, I learned the local shop had this one Inno unit, but was a larger 18cu ft . Was able to mock up both, and while the Thule size was a good scale, I felt the Inno shape/flow matched the ME better. Also, likely to vinyl wrap all or part of the box and the Thule’s lower textured plastic would prove to be less ideal.

Cool note, the glass roof is quite helpful in reassuring confidence in everything being secure since you can see it ALL very clearly, box, clamps, mounts, etc...

*Disclaimer – Use the seasuckers at your own risk, they have worked well for me so far, but I was pretty religious about applying it to a good clean surface and have checked the vacuum indicators daily.

also, box got a good a good Costco weather integrity test on the way home too

Any sense of the impact on range?

We will find out ;)

Still under 900mi on it with little to no highway, and lots of perf testing early on... so my guess-o-meter remains less credible until I get a trip under its belt

Is there a reason that a Thule roof system with door-sill-based rack-clamps wouldn't work on the MME? I have used this setup for 5 years on a PHEV Fusion Energi without an issue. It does reduce MPG a great deal, and I expect the Seasucker system will also significantly reduce the m/kWh as well.

Seems like a logical move, not like there is a recall on the roof not being adhered properly to the car or anything :D

I saw this posted online a few months back, think it was used on a Tesla though. Cool idea, but even then before the glass recall deal I was really questioning if I'd do something like that.

Might be a good idea to think of a spare tire now that there's more space on the roof. I had a blowout on first trip and have been thinking about extra cargo space on the roof now that I got myself a spare tire. Thanks for showing.

The recall was apparently ‘remedied’ before my GT was built ?? So far no noises or other notable reason for concern on my highway and higher speed tests

Exactly, with the added space I planned to put one of my full-size GT wheel/tire in the back… but I do also have a 19” Jaguar space saver spare to mock up and see if I can get it to clear the brembos

If you wrap a roof rack bar with a bungee cord it eliminates the noise. This video shows it using a bungee cord with hooks on either end, which works fine, but I think it looks leaner using a bungee with no hooks. You can buy bungee by the foot at a store like REI and just tie either end into a loop.

i’m not too familiar with those but assume adapters would just need to be made for the door sills, more specific to our cars?

Thanks for the share. I did see a video where a guy use para cord and it supposedly helped, didn’t look terrible either. I sourced some cleaner fitting foam insulation from Granger just need to swap it on, but plenty of bungee on hand the test as well

Is the car legal with roof load in the US?

Not the case in EU. Zero roof load allowed (apparently because the necessary tests were not done as the MME was designed primarily for US markets where roof load is uncommon).

Hitch and roof load are essential in Norway which is a big reason the car sells "ok" and not dominating the sales numbers. (EU version has hitch option, but only rated to 750kg)

** More Disclaimers - I am not an accredited rack installer, engineer, dentist, etc. Sharing my usage for recreational purposes **

I'm all ears and curious to learn if Munro or anyone else removed the headliner/trim etc on the ME, Tesla, or other glass roof cars to reveal how these glass panels are mounted (all urethane adhesive, brackets clipped or bolted, combination) and where the attachment/adhesive points are. I/we can speculate, but would be great to have more official confirmation.

Prior to going down this road I found several Tesla peeps with glass roofs utilizing very similar seasucker + cargobox setups. So far all positive feedback with a ton of combined mileage over several years, and some significantly heavier loads.

I originally sought a much smaller 10-13cu unit, but due to supply these days & my timeline I wound up with this larger unit, which could dual function over my truckbed as well. I don't intend to load it to capacity in this fashion, mostly lighter larger bulky baby items, stroller, bassinet, etc all told probably >50lbs. Box weighs ~40lbs, and rack ~12lbs. I followed suit of the Tesla folks and seasucker guidance on the wider placement of the vacuum mounts, targeting assumed roof to chasis mounting points

After months of waiting, Thule finally has a rack solution for the Mustang Mach E:

Looks like it only works for the metal roofs though.
