The article highlights Tesla's build issues and I know lots of EV's have unreliable infotainment systems (The Volvo one seems especially buggy) but for me reliability lives and dies on powertrain. Software issues can be fixed and even minor electrical problems addressed but battery and motor issues are what most people (including me) are really afraid of.
Software problems can still brick the car or cause plenty of frustration. My Accord liked to shut off the ACC, because, literally, it was seeing too much and crashing, and it would throw a fault when it happened. It took Honda 1-1/2 years to fix it and a couple of trips to the dealer, plus the recall.

Sure, it's fixed, but do you really need the disruption or towing costs because your software decided to freeze?

" Among electric SUVs, Fisher said Ford Motor Co's Mustang Mach-E "is the only one with above-average reliability."

That's honestly pretty amazing given that it would be based on first model year, add to that the recalls that have come up, seems to indicate that overall even with those teething issues the Mach E is still scoring above average. Gives me a lot of hope for our 2022 MME order being likely problem free, or at least with the larger stuff worked out.
I actually opted for an 8 yr extended warranty on my '22 Premium, something I have never done on a new car...ever. But given the relative newness of it all, $3k extra seemed OK. Seems maybe I have nothing to worry about :)

Still seems like yours has been pretty problem free, it just isn't able to take an OTA update, but is driveable and usable. That problem is more like not being able to use the memory function for your seats or something, annoying but hardly preventing general vehicle use.

I am surprised they are keeping your car though. My '21 F-150 wasn't taking a Sync update they tried to apply and they gave it back to me until they heard back from the Ford hotline. They want it back December 1st now that they were given things to try, but they didn't keep it while they figured that out. I can't imagine them just having it sit on their lot from last week through December 1st (at least) doing nothing while they waited for word from Ford.
First, after calling Ford more than once when my update settings failed and I got some strange warnings on my PaaK, the Ford directed me to get it to the dealership. During the time at the dealership, the service department has continuously tried to download updates and to check out various modules. They have been working directly with engineers at Ford and have conducted more than one master reset. Nothing has worked. The deaIership told me that they wanted to keep the car because of this ongoing process. I again contacted Ford and this issue was “escalated” to someone who is now the case manager. I asked her to let me have the car but she told me that Ford wanted the car to stay at the dealership while they are trying to fix the problem.

Finally, a new APIM has been ordered and hopefully will be here soon and it will fix the problems. The dealership has arranged a car rental for us while this has been going on. Had I known in the beginning what would happen, I would never have taken the car to the service department. This is the first MME sold in our community and the first time our dealership has worked on one. We’re learning the hard way.

They definitely can.

But I’m guessing that the way CR defines “reliability,” until it actually breaks something or bricks the car and it’s in need of a “fix” at the dealership, it doesn’t count.

Some of the buggy “I have to hit the same button multiple times” frustrations with BEVs may not register on the reliability scale.

So while our giant rolling cell phones are buggy, they aren’t “broken” as much as an ICE. Probably simply because there are less parts to break.

Tesla, electric SUVs get poor scores from Consumer Reports

(Reuters) -Vehicles from Tesla Inc and electric sport utilities from rival brands are among the least reliable models sold in the United States, a reflection of the risks of new technology, Consumer Reports said on Thursday.

Consumer Reports, a nonprofit organization that evaluates products and services, said Tesla, the world's most valuable automaker, ranked 27th out of 28 brands, just ahead of Ford Motor Co's Lincoln brand.

"Electric SUVs as a vehicle category is the absolute bottom in terms of reliability," Consumer Reports director of vehicle testing Jake Fisher said Thursday during a presentation to the Detroit Automotive Press Association.

Among electric SUVs, Fisher said Ford Motor Co's Mustang Mach-E "is the only one with above-average reliability."

Consumer Reports recommends the Tesla Model 3 sedan and rates its reliability as "average." But Fisher said the rest of Tesla's vehicles are below average.

The popular Model Y SUV, Tesla's best-selling vehicle, has problems with poorly fitting body panels, leaks and issues with its climate control, Fisher said.

The larger Model X SUV "still has problems with the falcon wing doors," Fisher said.

Consumer Reports has been critical of Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self Driving automated driving systems. Fisher said Consumer Reports still has concerns that drivers will rely too much on technology that cannot safely take over driving, but that did not factor into the reliability scores.

"Full Self Driving is not full self-driving at all," Fisher said. "It's a convenience feature."

Electric vehicle drive systems, or powertrains, are not the main source of problems, Fisher said. The issues reported by owners are with other features.

Manufacturers "are using EVs as a technological test bed," Fisher said. "Those are the things that go wrong."

The top-ranked brand overall in the survey was Lexus, and eight of the ten top-scoring brands were Japanese. That continues a long-running trend.

Among brands owned by Detroit automakers, Buick was the only one in the top ten, in fifth place.
The Buick Envision, which is assembled in China, was the most reliable compact luxury SUV in the Consumer Reports survey.
Consumer Reports is a data point. Been a subscriber for a long time and their rankings are actually pretty unreliable themselves. For example two vehicles built on the same assembly line with different badges often get dissimilar rankings yet they never admit that points toward flawed ratings systems. Their dishwasher ratings led us to a disaster of a Top Pick! So as with everything, you have to judge far more than on companys top pick it Gold Calipers, or whatever their top designation is.

We've been completely happy with our MachE so in this case we agree, but not because of CR.

My 2020 Model Y had faulty HVAC temperature sensors. That was the issue reflected in CA's surveys.

They were replaced under warranty (Tesla added the service when I purchased a retrofit for the Pedestrian Warning System (so I could use the Boombox feature...).

Unfortunately, the service center in Brentwood TN didn't put enough refrigerant back in the system, so needed a second appt to fix that about a month later after we had moved to Fishers, IN.

No issues since.

I also was the first at my dealer, now I have to take it in for the two recalls windshield and pano.... hope your issue is resolved with the APIM and it you get many miles of enjoyment from it!

I subscribe to the CR online and they do predict above average realizability. Funny thing is this rating is for a 2022 Premium MME but has anyone got a 2022? The 2021 MME was rated below average reliability based on the early loose bolt recall. I guess CR did a rare revisit.

That is exactly my own experience with Consumer Reports. I have stopped using them as a guide for large purchases.

I think extended warranties in that range are a good idea even with very reliable cars. With how little newer cars are able to be worked on in the driveway, especially something like a Mach E, all it would take is replacing a drive motor or whatever once in eight years and you are set.

The part I find most interesting is that if you search Mach E reliability in google the only search items returned are articles about how unreliable Tesla was rated. Why are media outlets not giving other great EVs there due and what’s with this obsession over Tesla being the only EV company people care about?
Anything 'Tesla' in the headline gets clicks. Clicks = ad revenue. Hence, clickbait articles.

I am knocking HARD on wood as I type this, but my MME 4X Premium, built in early July, has been fantastic thus far over about 3,000 miles with the only exception being poor navigation routing from the built-in stack over the last mile for three different addresses now. The hardware has been fantastic (again, knocking on wood). I use PAAK exclusively, and Apple CarPlay most of the time. It’s just been absolutely fantastic.
I've got early July build as well and have same experience, love this car, seems like we avoided the recalls so far (knock on wood). Just waiting on 1.7.1 still.

Yep. Navigation map is out of date. Unbelievable! Will try to set up Waze this weekend via carplay

For me, it’s more than the map data being out of date. A couple of the addresses I had trouble with have been there for 30 years…one of them for over 100 years. It seems to be something in the way the map data is being interpreted (on top of perhaps out of date data) that’s compounding the issue.

It always gets me “almost” there, but the last mile or so of at least three addresses now has me going in a completely wrong direction. One of those is for a DC Fast Charger at a Walmart, which is even more concerning.
