People who get mad a dealers for mark-up don't know how dealerships work - Ford sells the car to the dealer. The dealer owns the car. Then they sell it to you. When supply and demand are in equilibrium, they can't sell above MSRP because you'll walk to the next dealer and pay MSRP (assuming there is no collusion). When demand exceeds supply, like for most things today, prices go up. ECON-101. Some states / provinces have price gouging laws (the Gov. of Ontario went after people gouging PPE and hand sanitizer early in the pandemic) but I don't think we are there yet.

It's frustrating, it makes Ford look bad, but it's just how a free market works. It's better than a planned economy ;-)
It’s either OEMs or the dealers who adjust price according the market conditions. Can’t really blame them when buyers play along. Why would they sell for less?

....and Ford is powerless to do anything about it. The dealership model which is protected by law in most states needs to be revisited

https://cleantechnica.com/2021/11/2...-buyer-itd-probably-be-better-to-buy-a-tesla/
that article is saying something that is untrue: " found that Ford dealerships would not accept pre-orders of the new EV without adding a markup. "

There are many a dealers that dont add markup--i bought one from such a dealer going through the reservation/order process.
It smells bad when the source they quote is a teslerati propaganda machine. F...k tesla.

Consider the source. Clean Technica is citing an article in Teslarati (far from an unbiased source) who cites a Reddit Post in a Tesla Subreddit, but shows no evidence. Now the original post has been deleted by the OP. I'm not sure this ever really happened.
I'd also point out the OP only has one post, so I'll say I'd be skeptical of this information. and as you've pointed out, markups on hot cars have been around as long as cars have been built. It's hardly a ford issue.

People are upset about markup but everyone seems cool with Tesla increasing price from the get go. Bottom line, people end up paying more money for the car. It’s just the fact that you don’t pay the price you see on a sticker that upsets people.
or charging $10k for the "self driving" feature which still seems riddled with issues.

It's ironic that because Tesla has no dealers it raises prices, as much as $20k not on the Model Y, that everybody has to pay but that's OK because they're raising the MSRP. Ford, on the other hand, hasn't raised the MSRP but the dealers have raised the price instead but it's not OK.
The difference if you'll never get that ADM back EVER. On Teslas you will get that increase in MSRP back if you decide to trade in or sell. If Ford raises MSRP, that dealer ADM will still be there and you'll be $20k in the whole for depreciation.

It’s been speculated that Tesla is raising prices with an eye on their buyers being able to claim tax credits again if and when BBB passes.
teslas parts and logistics costs are rising. They have a strong backlog which is actually bad in that they agree a car price for sale before they have bought all the parts to make the car. The bigger the backlog the more problematic this is. To stay profitable they raise prices… I don’t think the BBB which may or may not happen is a significant factor.

So the headline claiming a Ford exec said… buy a Tesla… to a customer

Really? If that’s not a pure fabrication it’s taken out of context. Not exactly a paragon of journalistic integrity. o_O

This is the Internet. Anyone can say anything about anything. No integrity required.

I called this guy out on Reddit when he originally posted this on the Mach E subreddit. I also told him to take his bullshit over to the Tesla subreddit. He deleted his original post because of downvotes and posted over on the Tesla subreddit where it took off and here we are.

Bottomline, my take on this is that the Mach E hate is living rent free in all the Tesla fanbois heads. This is a plus reinforcing that I made a good purchase.

We went into Ford with an Edge Sport on the cliff w/bad tranny. The MME Select AWD was $1000 over MSRP but I got hacked off at the offer on the Edge (77,000 miles, tranny going south, 10 years old) and let them know “That we were loyal Ford customers and loyal to the dealer and I’ll be god damned if I’m going to accept that lowball offer because here’s the deal. I don’t have to buy from you as there are 6 dealers within 100 miles and if you as a dealer do not understand loyal customer service you will go out of business with us.” Now I’ve a voice that can rattled studs when I get jacked and my banker-negotiator S.O. whispered to me after..“perfect timing..worth a few thousand.” The O.P.’s post is dead on. Customer service/satisfaction is the dealer’s Job 1. And with BEV’s that’s even more important because we all will see them far less often. Possibly once a year or.. less.

People so quickly forget the that reason they didn’t have to pay sticker or got a good deal on their last car is the negotiating (buyer’s) power that the dealership model gives consumers. Have you tried negotiating with Tesla in the past?

Tesla doesn't negotiate. Your only hope is that you know an employee who will help you get a discount.

It's all fine and dandy if an OEM like Tesla changes prices 5 times a week and plays hide and seek with options and paint colors. As Musk says, everyone pays the same price (at a given time & place, for a specific car may be).

If a dealer offers discount to move cars, that's fine too; it's his duty.
But if he ever marks up because there is more demand than supply, he deserves to be hanged, per Tesla acolytes.
