I recently got my California renewal too. I have the AWD SR Premium. My Mach-E stickered at $51,440 with destination and delivery (included Rapid Red + Interior Protection Package).

Your First Edition costs about $7,000 more - $5,000 extra for the ER battery + $2,000 more for the FE, and then more or less depending on a couple small options.

My total is $570 ($610 really because of the $40 fee for the black plates).

Registration is $262, license is $297, $11 county/district fees, and $40 for the special plates.

As a frame of reference, I also got the renewal for my 2006 Mustang GT. The grand total for that one is $163, broken down as $122 for registration, $30 for license, and $11 for county/district fees.
Thanks for the breakdown. This in addition to the other posts suggests that it's just a numbers game based on vehicle cost.

Which means it's not based on the vehicle being electric and California getting their taxes back from lack of gas tax?

Doesn't seem like it's both...

I expect Florida will try to implement an EV registration surcharge. But I already pay state taxes on my consumption of electricity, so such a tax would be double taxation and unfair. More fair would be to have the state calculate what portion of the total tax on electricity is attributable to EVs, and send that money to the same highway fund receives the state gasoline tax.
The annual registration is only $35 (compared to $750 and $1500 I'm seeing here) so maybe there will be a EV surcharge as a road tax.

Florida is moving to more toll roads (my preference). The I-4 Ultimate project with the express lanes (paid) and the new 429 toll extension near me.

I just got my plate and registration in Arizona and it was about $50-ish total (itemized on the registration document). Not sure if that took into account any credit on the car I traded in, but I was happy to sneak in before the looming deadline in which it will go up here.

In Connecticut the EV registration and license fees are cheaper (the way it should be as an incentive to go the EV route)....for ICE it's something like $550 but maybe half that for EVs. My dealer was clueless on this so charged me the higher amount (even as I told them about it) but refunded me the difference afterwords as they went through the reg process for me.

You are not paying fuel taxes, so they need to make up the the money on registration fees.
No. California does not currently charge extra for EVs. The registration is based on the purchase value of the car.

Then I would suggest you prepare for the day they figure out your not paying the state gas taxes....

The average ICE vehicle uses around 600 gallons/year based on typical driving. They are trying to make up for the fact that you don't pay gas-tax to use the roads.

Here in Michigan I did the calculation and worked out that the (based on Michigan's gas tax) the average driver would pay about $211 in state taxes (this excludes the federal component of the gas tax which is about 18¢/gallon).

But you're in California ... I expect taxes are higher.
They'll be made to calculate this cost based on driving someday.

At inspection time mileage is noted. Paying based on an estimate isn't how taxes are supposed to be assessed. A lawsuit is coming - Musk is the most likely to head the class action suit to make road use taxes based on use, as they should be.

The California dmv site has a fee calculator. You can’t do renewal fees without a license and VIN but you can calculate the purchase fees.

That's for sure. They'll soon be adding an $8 fee per month for each KW capacity for solar panels. So, I have a 7KW solar system and it will cost me $56 per month because I generate solar power. So much for zero electricity costs.

They still got to charge people for the maintenance of the basic grid infrastructure, separate and apart from the cost of generating electricity on any given day.

The estimated VLF for my GT-PE (on my contact) is $431.00. The registration fee is $305.00. Total for these is $736.00. As was said before, CA levies their fees based on vehicle price. Each year the fees should be reduced a little based on estimated depreciation. It’s government. Once they figure out that we are not paying our share of highway wear and tear, plan on those fees escalating. I am pretty sure that California will not be levying based on mileage (I wish they would since my annual mileage is pretty small), so I will probably be getting screwed. ??

In Colorado, just registered my 2021 GT. Cost me $1,490 !!! That includes an additional $50 'fee' for EVs. The claim is that EVs do not generate enough tax dollars since they don't need gasoline.
