GOODYEAR INTRODUCES ITS FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE REPLACEMENT TIRE IN NORTH AMERICA

AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NASDAQ: GT) announced the launch of the new ElectricDrive GT. Marking Goodyear's first replacement tire in North America tuned for electric vehicles (EVs), the Goodyear ElectricDrive GT is an ultra-high performance, all-season tire that delivers long-lasting tread wear and a quiet ride for EV drivers and passengers.

"Products that anticipate the mobility needs of consumers are central to Goodyear's focus on innovation excellence. Electric vehicles present a very specific set of requirements for load, torque, noise, range, rolling resistance and overall performance," said David Reese, vice president, Product Development, Goodyear Americas. "We're proud to deliver leading technologies to serve the evolving EV landscape."

The ElectricDrive GT features Goodyear's SoundComfort TechnologyÂź, which acts as a built-in sound barrier that helps reduce road noise. It is also designed with an asymmetric tread pattern and specialized tread compound that provide enhanced all-season traction, giving EV drivers confident handling in both wet and dry road conditions.

"With the continued growth in the EV segment, Goodyear recognized an opportunity to provide consumers with a tire designed for the unique needs of these vehicles," said Andrew Lau, product marketing manager. "We know drivers are looking for a replacement tire that delivers enhanced tread wear without sacrificing performance. The ElectricDrive GT was designed with that in mind, and we're thrilled to bring this option to market for EV drivers in the U.S."

While Goodyear plans to expand the ElectricDrive product portfolio in 2022, the initial release of the Goodyear ElectricDrive GT is available in size 255/45R19 104W XL. This tire will be available through goodyear.com and is an ideal fit for some of the most popular EV high-performance models.

Exciting but has tire tech advanced enough to warrant the claim of an "ultra high performance all season"?

Every All season tire that I've ever driven with can't hold the candle to a proper summer tire.

All season tires offer slightly more grip than bowling shoes ?

?

I would suspect they mean ultra high performance for an all season tire. Specific application tires will always have an edge over general use tires. But if these sell, they will likely make a summer formulated version as well.

Goodyear says they have "plans to expand the ElectricDrive product portfolio in 2022"

Only in 255/45/19 to start with. That’s pretty wide for claiming low rolling resistance. But at least manufacturing EV specific tires is gaining some traction.

”Low rolling resistance” refers to the compound and construction, not the size. In a given size a LRR compound should be somewhat more range friendly than other compounds.

Interesting they don’t show the tread pattern which would help know the target category. To me “UHP All Seaon” sounds like a Conti DWS06 competitor instead of Conti ECS.

I don’t know anyone in the UK that changed summer and winter tyres.

It will be interesting to see how well they perform in snow. From what I have read, most low rolling resistance tires perform very poorly in snow. I know, all season are not really good snow tires anyway, but good all seasons do well enough in cold/snow conditions.

Oh no, I hope I didn't start another winter tire debate. Not my intention!

I have coworkers in the Netherlands and it's fairly common there but trending down. One huge difference is in Europe to be called "All Season" the tires must have three-peak mountain snowflake. In the USA these are typically referred to as "All Weather" tires

So a Goodyear tire like this would not be sold in Europe because it would be called a "summer" tire. And much better summer tires than this are probably available.

Also, Europe has very different requirements for performance in wet, noise, and rolling resistance. I actually hope the USA adopts the EU tire label system it's sooo much better than what we do here for EV owners.

I have enough trouble keeping my car charged, why would I want to have to charge EV tires? ?

All joking aside - this image makes the whole concept make a lot of sense. Given how quiet the car is overall, reduced tire noise on the highway would be very beneficial.

This is very interesting to me. I just hope they don’t come out being stupidly expensive just because they’re EV targeted

I checked the Goodyear site, no prices yet - the tire isn't even listed. I'll check back periodically

Yes. They’re not to current summer tire levels but the current top spec Michelin, Goodyear, Continental et al. UHP All Seasons can shame the best summer tires from say, over 10-15 years ago. Easily in the .90-.95 lateral G category and 70-0 braking in the 150-160 ft range.
