That's for sure. They'll soon be adding an $8 fee per month for each KW capacity for solar panels. So, I have a 7KW solar system and it will cost me $56 per month because I generate solar power. So much for zero electricity costs.
fark'em, disconnect yourself from the grid and buy batteries instead

In NY, we pay sales tax on the purchase of the vehicle.
Then a registration fee. I think it was around $125 a year. I also pay a custom plate fee per year....because it costs them nothing for my plate other than the initial purchase.....
I will get the full details when I renew.

I pay a school and property tax on my house, about 5K a year.

The Gov't will get money one way or another. I just pay it and move on. I own a small business and have been double taxed for years. It is what it is.

In Colorado, just registered my 2021 GT. Cost me $1,490 !!! That includes an additional $50 'fee' for EVs. The claim is that EVs do not generate enough tax dollars since they don't need gasoline.
Yes, but you got a nice cute sticker for your $50...

Update: I got lucky a few minutes ago and got the "2021" rate of less than $14 per year for five years for our Arizona registration.

Arizona's personal property tax is collected through a Vehicle Lieu Tax (VLT) based upon the value of the vehicle at the time of the renewal. For example, our 2018 Ford Edge will renew in February 2022 for an annual fee (including VLT) of $358. If Arizona reinstates the VLT for $50K + BEV's like the Mach E, the registration fees are going to increase significantly.
VLT is Vehicle License Tax. https://azdot.gov/adot-blog/your-top-vehicle-registration-questions-and-answers

As long as we don't re-register the vehicles into a different owner name (e.g. transfer to a family member, or sell to 3rd party), then the rate calculation doesn't change.

The only benefit to registering for more than one year ahead is the postage/handling portion of registration, something like $7 or $8 per year, iirc.
It is interesting to see how the Arizona Reduced VLT decreases over the life of a five year renewal:

Year 1: $15.98

Year 2: $13.58

Year 3: $11.55

Year 4: $9.81

Year 5: $8.34

A single $8.00 registration fee and $0.25 air quality compliance fee apply to the five year renewal, (plus, as you noted, the $0.58 postage fee. ) ?

Some people here (including me) call it a lieu tax since it is "in lieu of" a state personal property tax. The VLT eliminates the need for taxpayers to file a personal property statement for tax purposes every year. As described in the Arizona DOT website you cited:

Question) What is a Vehicle License Tax?

Answer) A Vehicle License Tax (VLT) is part of your vehicle registration fee. In Arizona, a VLT is assessed in place of a personal property tax charged by other states.

Personalized plate, by any chance?
It was an out of state purchase so there were additional fees on top of the base (you can tell by the sale date vs registration date). The base was about $750 as others have mentioned. But in general terms, California likes to bend us over.

Every year they hit your cars, boats, RVs, boat motors, etc. with a property tax that's very noticeable could be over $1,000 a year for a car or boat. 2 cars over $50,00, 2 boats, you're paying $3,000 or more a year.
My boat cost me $35 to register every year (Yamaha AR230 twin engine jet boat). Thank god I live in Arizona.

Buy an expensive car, pay a lot for registration. Been that way in this state for decades. Doesn't matter what your powertrain is. Judging by the comments in this thread, California hasn't cornered the market on the highest fees.

Once they figure out that we are not paying our share of highway wear and tear, plan on those fees escalating. I am pretty sure that California will not be levying based on mileage (I wish they would since my annual mileage is pretty small), so I will probably be getting screwed. ??
I'm with you here. 11 months in and I think I only have about 7,000 miles on the vehicle.

That is tragic. I definitely didn't imagine another state coming in higher than California.

Mystery solved. Just gotta buckle up and pay the "double car payment" one month a year. At least the car still makes me smile every time it greets me with it's pretty lights...

I am like you. I prefer to just register for 5 years and get it over with. I tried to have my dealer do it when I bought the car but it confused them for some reason. I renewed my registration a few weeks ago. Total cost for 5 years is $71.50. My registration expires Feb 28th, 2027.

Come to Colorado. 1st year registration is 2.3% MSRP.
Yup,

People don't know how good they have it...we get crushed here in CO. Annual registration on this car without a significant trade is easily over 1k for the next 5 years.

God I love Delaware. $225 for 5 years registration :)

Also no personal property tax, AND I'll get a $10/month bill credit from my electric service provider for doing the majority of charging during off-peak hours.
