I hear a kinds of hype about braking regen but I can't wrap my head around how this could really produce enough to make a difference.

Is regen really returning enough e eegy to matter?

Should I change to one pedal or a different driving mode to get better regen?

Is there some hidden benefit to regen I'm missing?

Free electricity.

Slow gradually. Use L.

Regen captures energy that would normally be converted to waste heat by the friction brakes. That energy is substantial. You do not need to do anything different. Drive in any mode you please. Regen exists in all modes. If you are interested in maximizing regen then drive in Engage mode until you get consistent 100% Brake Coach scores. Then you can switch to any drive mode you want and you will still get those same benefits of recaptured energy.

Yes, you can regenerate a significant amount of energy. You can maximize regeneration by either using the L setting on your shifter or using one pedal drive in Unbridled.

And by using the brake pedal in a sensible fashion......

I routinely saw 30 kW regen on my Chevy Volt, albeit briefly. On long downhills it is not unusual to see the EV range increase, so hardly insignificant.

Im not sure how accurate this is (it’s probably optimistic) but according to the ford app my 40mile trips usually get 5-8miles from regen and that’s mostly freeway-some traffic.
If you use 1PD and don’t touch the brake youre maximizing your regen. Some say that the different modes affect max regen in 1PD but I don’t see it. Yes, there’s a difference in pedal travel but lifting off suddenly gives me the same feeling of max regen in all 3 modes.

I'm confused is the benefits after 100% bake coach because the computer algorithm changes or because you ha a retrained yourself how to brake so not you will see the benefits in other modes?

I've taken a lot of measurements of regen in a lot of modes, and while there are longer threads on it, here are a few important points:
  • You can regen a significant amount of energy. On a typical 1 hour route I drive that is fairly flat, but with rolling hills and some stop and go, I've calculated that regen is giving me about 25% of my range. That is huge, and a great advantage for EVs.
  • All driving modes use regen, 1 pedal, normal, L, whisper/engage/unbridled. So use whichever you are most comfortable with.
  • The car will regen when you let off the pedal (more aggressively in 1PD, less so in normal mode), and will ALSO regen when you press the brake pedal. The only time the car uses the friction brakes are to hold you at a stop (after you've already stopped), or if you call for more than ~0.2gs of deceleration, by any means.
  • If you make an effort to slow gradually, you'll maximize your regeneration, and thus your range. Do so in whichever mode feels most natural for your (though I like 1PD, Engage). Turn on the "Brake Coach" to show you how effective your slowing is at recapturing energy.
Hope that helps.

The brake coach doesn't change how the car drives, it just shows you whether your braking speed is making the most of regen or not. So you are the one being calibrated, not the car.

I know ice and ev are different but driving in L wont hurt the car a highway speeds?
It won't hurt the car, but I don't think there is any reason to do it. If you want more aggressive regeneration without using the brake pedal, try 1PD, that is what it is there for.

The belief is when you learn a driving style that achieves 100% brake scores on a frequent basis then that same style works equally as well in in all other modes including 1PD, 2PD, D and L.

This points out one thing I find is really missing on the Mach E instrument panel. Every other BEV out hybrid I’ve driven has some indicator of instantaneous power use vs regeneration. I really wish the Mach E showed this in every driving mode.

Not at all. Remember that the Mach E has a single speed transmission. L is only different from D when you are decelerating.

The GT models do. I’m really hoping that Ford realizes that this basic information shouldn’t be withheld from non-GT owners and that we get it in a future update.
