I agree you can't force an update before one is available to you. But once it becomes available via the notification icon on the screen and/or notice in FordPass then you are then able to force it to install. There is a button on the screen for that purpose.

This only applies if you have Auto updates turned off, correct?

Does anyone know or have any theories as to what happens (if anything) in the time between when the update says it is complete on the Sync screen vs the completed notification in FordPass?

For the 1.7.1 update.....that time was about 46 hours.
For the 2.1.0 update it took about 70 hours.

Is this just a delay in messages pushing to FordPass or is there something happening in that time span?
For me the in car notice for 2.1.0 came later. On Thursday morning I woke up to a notification my app that the update had completed. But I didn't see any notification in the car until 10:00 that night, with several drive cycles throughout the day.

20 minutes ago when I turned my car on I got a notification again for 2.1.0 ?‍♂

Interesting. I wonder if I am the only one with the delayed message in FordPass?

Has anyone received a "your update was unsuccessful " message?
Yes, my wife. She's been stuck on 1.7 for weeks. Pre June '21 build.

I actually have never, not once, received a software update notification in Fordpass. I’m on 2.1. Even most of my Fordpass notifications only get pushed when I force close the iOS app. It’s weird. Must be a background process thing on my phone.

I see the unsuccessful message at Ford's web site, but not in FordPass or in my vehicle.

You are not. Mine seems to pop up in FP next time I drive the car. Except 1.7.1 that took more than a day.

1.4.0 - Added Securialert
1.6.0 - Nothing you'd notice
1.7.1 - Sync update, added notes
2.1.0 - Nothing you'd notice
2.3.0 - Sync update, added some games and update scheduling abilities
I think I got two updates before 1.4 that didn't have the numbers and didn't explain what they did.

That is true. This was before they were branded as power ups. They were for the GWM and employees on the forum were guessing that they were tests of the OTA system

No, but prior to 2.3.0 that is the most likely time you would see any updates available.

According to the release notes in 2.3.0 you can also get updates sooner instead of waiting for them to be scheduled for your vehicle. Guess we will see if that really works after people have 2.3.0 and something new comes out...

Okay. So the process seems a lot more complicated than ever imagined. I have automatic updates turned off.
  1. Received messages in FordPass saying an update was pending and action required. I was unable to figure out how to make it go away so it stays there and hounds you until you do something about it.
  2. In the car there is a little icon that looks like a tray with a down arrow. That means an update is available.
  3. Click that icon or browse to the system update screen and you can see details and the update ID. There you have a choice to schedule the update or force it to install at that time.
  4. The icon goes away and for the next several hours the update says "pending".
  5. The notice in FordPasd vanishes.
  6. Later in the day, the status changes to Up To Date and displays the OTA ID and release notes.
  7. 3 days later, FordPass says the update was successful.
  8. Get in the car and it shows the tray icon with down arrow and a checkmark next to it.
  9. Touch that icon and it says Update Successful and two button choices Details or Close.
There might be other steps for updates that fail to install. Not sure since that hasn't happened to me that I know about.

Of course if you have automatic updates enabled then all that probably happens in the background. Seems like a lot of steps. No wonder some people are having troubles with stuck or failed updates....

None of this seems surprising or complicated to me. ??‍♂ I don't see how any of the steps you outlined could be omitted, especially while providing support for manual updates (i.e. user-controlled update scheduling).

I agree, except maybe the time line between the steps. There are a lot of different components and part of that might be cost savings on a lot of different components making them slow to update. Most manufactures rather save $1000 spread over 50 components than provide a better user experience that could update the components in a tenth of the time. (Not saying that is or is not the case for the Mach E, but wouldn't surprise me if it is, plus slower components tend to also use less electricity)

I think I am making it more complicated by turning off automatic updates. But it is interesting how many steps are involved now that I have to update manually. Not complaining.....it isn't really any trouble. The point of my post is so others can appreciate all the different things that need to happen for an update to be successful. You probably understand this all because you know more details about the back end compared to the average driver.

That being said....
Jeep does it in less steps. I don't get any notice in the Uconnect app and there isn't any icon on the infotainment screen that I noticed. Instead, there is message that displays on the screen at shutdown that says an update is ready and I can see the details and what is being fixed. It actually is quite detailed and lists the fixes. I then have a choice to delay/schedule for later or if I do nothing then it will start installing when I exit the vehicle. Kinda like my phone.

The major difference with the Jeep is the update takes effect as soon as the vehicle is started for the next trip. In the Mach-E, it will take 2 or 3 days for the "update successful" message. I wonder why the Mach-E needs several days when the Jeep only needs about 35-45 minutes?

Seems interesting to me. ???

Worthing noting that for CarPlay users, 1.7.1 and, from what I've read, 2.3.0 have some worthwhile updates:

1.7.1 - Displays directions on GOM screen
2.3.0 - CarPlay now works fullscreen (+ volume bar adjustments.)

I don't yet have 2.3.0 so I could be wrong here.
Yes. Both of these were nice little additions for Apple CarPlay users.

Which one updated the charging curve? I think that’s something people will notice.
That is Ford Satisfaction Program 21P22, available to Job 1 vehicles only by visiting the service center. Not OTA.
