I love that this pre-production MME has photochromic glass in the Panoramic Fixed Glass Roof. Looking back at all the pictures. It seems that every photo has a different amount of tint, which makes me think this has been a very well kept secret up until now.

Has there been a confirmation that this will end up in the final production version?

Since we haven't heard of photochromic glass roofs on passenger vehicles (have we?), it seems more likely that there were variations in outside lighting conditions and camera exposures.

It was mentioned here:

The leather is pretty dark (very much a dark gray). It was a very bright day, so the pictures are kind of an illusion on the leather. When the doors are closed, it's much different.

The glass roof makes a difference too. It is a smart glass roof. Since it was so bright yesterday, I could barely see out of it. Couldn't feel the sun at all, felt like a black headliner. But he said that at night, you could see the stars.
I'm hoping it's a production feature.

@ajmartineau, @Kamuelaflyer:

Ah. I was thinking of the photos we've seen that included a view of the pano roof glass from inside the car. Which so far, has been very few photos.

Yeah I hope you guys are right. It would be an awesome surprise! Not going to get my hopes too high though.

It would br great, but it seems like a feature that Ford would be talking about if true. Does anyone know of cars that have this type of glass?

The Polestar 2 apparently.

The Polestar 2 apparently.
How is it apparent?

Polestar describes it this way in its owners manual: The vehicle has a full panoramic window in tinted glass to reduce incoming light, heat and ultraviolet rays.

So far, Ford's model comparison describes the roof in even less detail: Panoramic Fixed-Glass Roof

The very best I've seen is from Ford's November press release for the new model:

Even the available panoramic fixed-glass roof has a secret: a special coating on the glass with UV protection helps the interior stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The overall solar transmission performance of the glass roof is better than all Tesla models.

On their web site Polestar says:

This special, innovative glass reduces solar radiation to the point where sunshades aren't required.

I hope that this part is true at least for the Mach-e:

The overall solar transmission performance of the glass roof is better than all Tesla models.

Hey I just noticed something very interesting... I saved off a copy of that press release a long time ago and never remembered seeing the word "Tesla" from anything Ford officially published. But the copy I just linked above does mention them.

So I went back and checked and sure enough, the wording has changed. The file I saved (I'll refer to this as "original") was created on 11/14 and modified on 11/14. The one I linked above (which I'll refer to as "latest") was created 11/12 and last modified on 12/3.

The differences are mostly minor, for clarification and grammatical standards. Things like 12,000 public "chargers" changed to "charge stations."

But, there are some more notable changes:
  • Original release says Ford is targeting for the GT Performance to offer an estimated 342 kW (459 horsepower) and 830 Nm (612 lb.-ft.) of torque, while the latest release says both GT configurations have this target.
  • Latest release changed expected GT deliveries to start in Summer 2021 instead of Spring 2021.
  • Latest release removes mention of Brembo's all-new performance Flexira aluminum calipers.
  • Latest release assigns the name "eAWD" to refer to the all-new AWD system for the dual motor Mach-Es.
  • The text mentioning Tesla that I copied in my prior post was added in the latest release. The original release instead said: Even the available panoramic fixed-glass roof has a secret – a special glass coating with infrared protection helps the interior stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. In addition, an inner layer between the glass helps protect against UV rays.

None of those tell me it's a variable/changing tint.

It could be this from 3M. "stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter"

There's no reason not to believe Joe regarding the smart glass he mentioned. I'm looking for a source that can say it is or isn't in the production version.

It is not variable. But it is a low e ( low emissivity) coated glass like they use on buildings to reduce solar load and improve u-value which means improves insulation. I am 100% certain of this but don’t have energy to find sources. ?

That is why the badging on the car should indicate eAWD instead of AWD

@Redundant

See post #1 in this thread.
Q: I would like to know if the glass roof seems to let in a lot of heat or is unobtrusive?
A: It is a smart *PASSIVE* glass roof. Since it was so bright yesterday, I could barely see out of it. I couldn't feel the sun at all, felt like a black headliner. But he said that at night, you could see the stars.

Low-e that I have seen doesn't look like a "black headliner" while still being able to see the stars at night, as the Ford employee stated.

This isn't a new thing.

Yup. But some people aren't going to believe that until they see it engraved in stone handed down from on high in Dearborn.

Exactly!
That's why I'm looking for a second source. Remember Joe didn't see it at night.
