Sounds like FUD. Do you have a reference? Excluding Tesla, the Bolt is the best selling EV in the US. AFAK they have worse selling vehicles. Looking at the sales numbers, I see plenty of vehicles selling worse from GM.
Chevy sold 20,000 Bolts last year and 594,000 ICE Silverados. And they’re getting rid of the ICE Silverado?? The Bolt represented 1.1% of Chevy sales last year.

https://www.best-selling-cars.com/usa/2020-full-year-usa-gm-sales-chevrolet-buick-cadillac-gmc/amp/

The only current model Chevy sold less of was the Sonic.

So, technically it’s Chevy’s “2nd worst” selling model. But either way……. It’s waaaaaaaay down on the list of best sellers.

I think you missed my point: I do not yet have BlueCruise. Once BlueCruise is available, it is supposed to be available for 3 years, which will be beyond the 3 year mark for me (say ford activates BlueCruise 1 April 2022, that would be 1 year after I got my car. I suspect BlueCruise requires accurate maps, so that tells me that I’d have to have updates for the duration of BlueCruise.
I would expect they would give 3 years of updates for Blue Cruise and maps for it after they start. That said, Ford could continue to update one part of the car (navigation) without updating software for other parts.

Tesla is in the same boat, and Ford will likely be in the same boat in a year (or at least in the phase out). Of course who know what the government might do... Short term that matters, but in the long term it's moot (assuming the companies don't fold too quickly).
1. GM is a day late and a dollar short WRT EV Trucks.
2. Tesla already has the vast majority of the market share, and they are unveiling a more affordable model in the near future.

I thought the writing was on the wall for GM when they announced “100% electric by 2035.”

Their least profitable, worst selling and worst vehicles they make are their electric cars.

And they decided, “hey, what if we ONLY make the things that are terrible and lose money?”

Seems like a horrible business decision. I think they were just hoping to get a stock jump like Tesla where the stock price has nothing to do with actual vehicle sales and profits.
I think that's exactly what it is/was.

Oh yeah. I didn't even think of that. I do think people that are willing to pay for Blue Cruise would also be willing to pay for the connected nav after the free trial runs out.

Sometimes the free trial doesn't end though. I think MyFordMobile was provided for a period of time for free with the intent of a subscription fee later. That didn't ever happen as far as I know. Maybe the same will happen here?

I got a similar letter from VW for my 2017 Golf R. In their case they just obsoleted it with no option to upgrade the modem or compensation for features lost. Just a kind of "thanks for playing" email.
I got a similar e-mail from Toyota regarding our 2016 Highlander. They said it is due to the 3G cellular system being turned off in the US. I suspect it is the same for your VW and the other poster’s niece’s Ford. At least the niece got the option to replace the cellular modem in the car so that she could maintain the remote connected services (crash notification, remote preconditioning, etc). I would pay $300 to Toyota for a new modem to keep the connected features working.

I wouldn't say zero. It is the OEM that specifies the requirements to the supplier. If the OEM did not make efforts to futureproof their product using a standard already in use, then that is nearsightedness. I know it is a cost driven decision but making a modem 4G/LTE compatible is peanuts even at volume.
Your point is valid depending on where in the life cycle of 4G/LTE the device was created. My Ford remote start / alarm was developed before my 2013 F-150 was made, and by a 3rd party. And the services, i.e. the remote start, were also provided by a third party, not Ford. They killed it a year ago, for no valid reason, other than the excuse that 3G was shutting down.

Many home alarm systems are going to stop working soon. I changed my communication technology (actually my home alarm) over a year ago to prepare for this, and have 4G cellular with internet back.

That's a good point. It depends when the original part was specified/developed.
Our alarm system at home had to have the comms. module changed recently due to the 3G obsolescence. The nice thing there was the wall unit manufacturer had made a 4G module that was backwards compatible with the existing wall unit. I wonder if the newer 4G comms. for auto are plug and play in older cars as well to replace the 3G units. Doubt it...

NEAR future? I assume you don't follow Tesla's track record on timelines very closely?
I'm not a Tesla fan boy, but I would bet they bring out a smaller, affordable Tesla and the cybertruck before GM brings their EV Silverado abomination to market. Does GM even have a Hummer that the press can drive by themselves on a non-closed course? I don't think they do.
