TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
Lack/Loss Of Heat While Driving During Freezing Temperatures
22-2182
05 May 2022

Model:
Ford

2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E

Issue: Some 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E vehicles may exhibit a lack/loss of heat while driving during freezing temperatures. This may be due to the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) control module software. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to update the HVAC software.

Action: Follow the Service Procedure to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:
  • 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E
  • Lack/loss of heat while driving during freezing temperatures
Service Procedure

1.
Reprogram the HVAC control module using the latest software level of the Ford Diagnostic and Repair System (FDRS) scan tool.

NOTE: Recommend the customer use AUTO mode and adjust the temperature to maximize heater performance.

This is the follow-up to SSM 50645 announcing this fix was coming. This will hopefully improve the heat for users that were complaining about poor output in non-extreme conditions. However I still expect design limitations when the temp gets down to -25ºC/-13ºF, heat may be increasingly limited below those temps. Setting a departure time in those conditions is virtually required to pre-warm the battery pack (remote start does not heat the battery). The heater is not powerful enough to warm both the pack and the cabin simultaneously in extreme cold. The pack is also slow to warm due to its large thermal mass (may take ~1+ hour to warm up).

Per the note in blue above, I'd recommend using the lowest AUTO (one dot) setting and adjusting the temp to suit in extreme cold temps. Keeping the fan speed as low as possible will provide the warmest air.

This is great news! I was hesitant to bring my car in with this issue last winter where there was no TSB. Do we think this will ever come as part of an OTA update?

Looks like that module is OTA updateable, so it’s possible.

The ACCM is not though, so not sure what that means, but I believe FDRS update only was for HVAC module

I installed this update yesterday and now just have to wait for freezing temps once again. If I'm lucky, that means October or November. 🥶

Did you notice heat loss in the winter? I have driven in cold temperatures, but have not had a problem with heat. It could be that my car is usually inside a garage where it is not below freezing when I start a trip. So I will have no way of determining if the fix corrects anything on my car.

Yes, I did. It was noticeable. Most of the time I only received cold air. I ended up just keeping it off and relying on jacket, gloves, seat and steering wheel warmer only.

I hope this fixes the issue.

Does this also mean the cars in production today will have this update when shipped to customer?

Seems like Ford goofed up a bit going with a 5kW PTC that does double duty for both cabin and battery heating. Glad to see they're tweaking the software to help get the most out of it.

Non scientific update: it seems like my heat is more consistent now since applying this update. We're having unseasonably cold weather this past due to a Nor'easter and it's been "tested" many mornings...

I did have this update on June 6th but one member of a FB group went to have this update today but they told him that it wasn't available anymore and they'll come with another solution next fall. Can somebody else confirm this?
