Tesla to J1772 Adapter for Destination Chargers

Found this on the internet for $79.99 "Free shipping to USA!" This site gives all the information and has 100,000 in stock. Note in Specifications and compatibility below there are some restrictions. I'm not familiar with Tesla's different chargers.

  • Specifications and compatibility – Tesla to J1772 adapter, used to connect SAE J1772 standard Electric Vehicles to Tesla chargers. Just connect the adapter to the Tesla charger, then connect to your J1772 standard vehicle. Please note: The J1772 Adapter is not compatible with Tesla’s third-generation charging stations. And the first and second generation Tesla charging stations are not compatible with BMW I3 and e-Golf. These could be the home EVSE wall chargers.
The thread is about the Tesla SUPERCHARGERS. There is no adapter on the market today that will allow a non-Tesla vehicle to use a Tesla SUPERCHARGER in the US. None.

One exists for CCS to Tesla, but not the other way around yet. In a recent earnings call Tesla said they have figured out a way to implement it
I hope a Tesla super charger to ccs adapter along with software/app to allow it to work is the first step, since this could be implemented quickly.

That adapter would have to be fairly long though since the Tesla cables are pretty short. Probably make it an expensive adapter. Anyway, keep it under $500 and I'd be all for it.

Then over time start upgrading the actual chargers with ccs connectors.

This won't happen IMO. Tesla doesn't get a dime of federal funds by selling adapters to people.

Obviously no government money in the adapter. This is why I would hope it would be a first step since it could be implemented so quickly. Allows Tesla to sell a product and service immediately all while concurrently upgrading the physical chargers with ccs to get that government money.

I would not purchase this adapter. It is only rated at 40 Amps, and there are Tesla destination chargers that supply 48 Amps (or more). It could melt in your plug and really mess up your car. TeslaTap is the way to go. Lots of people have used TeslaTap, including me, and they are reliable and safe. http://www.umc-j1772.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=17

And there are forum threads for non-supercharging Tesla adapter discussions. Search for TeslaTap. As Rick said, this thread is about Superchargers, not L2 destination chargers.

Destination Chargers aren't Superchargers. There are multiple adapters readily available for Destination Chargers like the TeslaTap.

Superchargers are the ones most people are interested in when talking about "roadtripping" and are what is in scope for this thread.

I don't think it is that easy at all.

The CCS to Tesla adapter is dumb piece of molded plastic and metal (no microchips) because Tesla EVs have the complicated CCS compatible hardware inside and yet the adapter is $300+

The Tesla to CCS adapter might be non-trivial as Tesla uses CAN-bus for communication and CCS is some analog signal wired through the J-1772 pins. I'm only guessing at the extra complexity because CHAdeMO adapters are complicated and expensive devices.

The question I have is... why is the WHITE HOUSE announcing this??

A precursor to a trruckload of subsidies?

FYI the CCS to Tesla adapter only works with Teslas built from 2021 onwards as the newer cars have CCS charging hardware built in.
According to State of Charge, it actually started about in the middle of 2020, and he shows you can check your Tesla on the screen in the car.

Sort of. There's a build date chart with CCS Gen4 ECUs and it really wasn't normalized end of 2020 (2021 model year). There were parts shortages and for some months (in 2021) cars were not installed with them which is typical Tesla (remove a part without telling people). Retrofit kits are available and not too costly though (a few hundred).

Multiple reasons.
1) Been using it on every Internet forum and Blog including CompuServe before windows 95 came around.
2) It indicates what I’m saying is just my opinion rather than the fantastic MacGyver types here who disassemble the car and can tell us everything about it including how to program it
They should be FMC engineers. I bet Ford can’t afford them ….it’s to differentiate that I am not one of them and do not take anything I say as fact …don’t ever try it out on your pony
3. It used to be the name of a blog I ran for struggling golfers and comments on the game in general until it became a pitch battle about who loves and who hates Tiger Woods so then I shut it down. Over a four year period I made $65.86 in click revenue. Lol. Chaching
4. It fascinates me how many people mimic it copy it and replicate it when I do it and question me about it because it doesn’t seem to be that big of a
freaking deal
5. In the last 20 years after using different screen names on different blogs about varying topics I found the same people Recognize me anyway and that was really kind of fun because we hadn’t talked in years and it was on a totally different topic so yeah that was fun
6. How do you know my name isn’t Jes Sayin. ?

anyway. Jes sayin
This is all a much better answer than I expected, so I am glad I asked. I will note that number 5 is very true. I rarely pay attention to a poster’s name, but anytime I read Jes Sayin, I know exactly who posted the message. It’s the Jes Sayin person again.
