Why aren't Ford dealers required to have fast chargers?

Where Tesla opens SCs to CCS, they add a CCS cable and handle to the charger.
I would imagine any new superchargers in the US that will get installed "might" be dual TSC and CSS cabled chargers. I don't know if that's a requirement of the newly passed legislation that had a ton of money earmarked for expanding the EV charging network.

From what I can remember in the last few years, the EU had mandated that any EV charging units had to be CSS. So, all Tesla SuperChargers that have popped up lately are CSS, and even the cars they sell in the EU only have CSS ports.

Either way, it's probably makes good sense for us to have a TSC to CSS adapter, as we "should" be able to charge at Tesla destination chargers in the US that only have TSC connectors (maybe?). That, and I'm sure it's going to take a while for Tesla to retrofit all of the superchargers they have all over the country.

What is this newly-passed legislation of which you speak? Did I miss something?

H.R.3684 - Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Was signed to law on 11/16/2021. Ear-marked "(15) The installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and vehicle-to-grid infrastructure." I think the number is $7.5b.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/3684/text

This is different than the build back better act that has stalled in congress. I think that one had the possible changes to fed tax credit for EVs, but don't quote me on that.

Gotcha! That seems like it was forever ago…didn’t register to me as “new”. Thanks.

Tesla destination chargers are only L2 (240V AC). There's already an adapter available for that (TeslaTap), that converts to a J-1772 for L2 charging. But no DC connectors to make it a CCS combo plug. That wouldn't work anyway unless the Supercharger is authorized to work with CCS vehicles and protocols. While J-1772 (L2) charging is "dumb", CCS (L3) is a "smart" protocol that talks to the car and negotiates charging parameters.

I'm confused by Ford selling EV's and not at least requiring their dealerships to have fast DC charging stations. I'm nearing delivery of my Mustang Mach-E GT and likely won't be able to make a trip from Saint Paul MN to Green Bay without hours of slow charging. There are tons of Ford dealers along that trip, and not one of them has a fast charger.
Most of them don't even have a 240v plug. This doesn't meet my expectations at all.

As I've driven this route for years
. I expected no problem for this route with all the dealers. Then I stopped by the dealerships and found NOTHING at theses dealership to fill in the charging gaps. Does anyone else expect more from FORD dealerships?
Good to know next time I’m out that way! Considering it seems to be very hard on the batteries, I don’t think Ford would encourage their dealers to have DC Fast Charging, but If they struck a deal with EA, it probably wouldn’t be bad to increase the availabile charge points and draw people to the dealers. Hell, it could become a separate biz model to have chargers/bathrooms/snacks at the dealers.

Dorsch Ford in Green Bay stepped up, and now there is ONE fast charger in the Green Bay area.

Yes, you may wait in line to use it, but there is ONE!

Strangely its not part of the Ford network, its ChargePoint as confusing as that is.

Bruh, they aren’t even required to know anything about the EVs, dealers suck
Not all dealers are buying into EV yet. They don't see the profit margins that they got with ICE. Certain areas it's very negative.

I see an hour and a half charging for that trip, which doesn’t sound terrible. Two of those stops are EA.

That said, I’m all in support of dealers contributing to the charging network. Our VW/Porsche dealer has had free 50kw charging for years. I think a lot of VW dealers do now. I’ve already walked in a couple times for accessories and gear while charging

A local Chevy dealer also installed a HUGE $1.2 million solar array. That’s some forward thinking. As service revenue comes down they’re offsetting their electricity and fuel costs and potentially could install pay chargers too. I know they’ve installed a CCS station but haven’t been by to see it yet.
There is a Hundi dealer in Albany that installed solar on all buildings and the side of the building next to the front has 8 huge battery packs on the wall that are 3' by 4' and 18 inches deep. 3 chargers by the front door that are free. More in the service parking area. Problem is that their own employees are always using them.

There may be a business case for DCFC in the area, but that doesn't mean that the dealership is the one that needs to install it.

Plus the dealership doesn't care whether someone chooses an EV or an ICE. They just want people buying vehicles.
Their service bays and parts make more money than the sales in some dealers.

Buggy whip thinking, I'm sort of wondering if Ford dealerships should survive if they have that attitude 🤔. If you want to survive you need to figure out why your competition is kicking your ass, not double down on your buggy whip past.

Where I live, there is a lot of opposition to EV's. They make up all kinds of fake information on why not to own one. When I tell them the facts, they just walk away. Even had one tell me it cost $19.00 per minute to charge.

Okay fair point, the Amish still use buggy whips in central Wisconsin.😉
