So three weeks ago I had the dreaded service vehicle soon message. Of course it was the HVBJB issue and after going through all the steps the part finally arrived at the dealership last week. I expected to finally get my car back after three weeks only to find out that my dealership did not have the lift to service my car and that it had to go to another dealership an hour away. It was my understanding that it would be towed to the other dealership. Instead they drove it there.

I was pissed because 1) they told me it was being towed, 2) they should have had the proper equipment there to begin with and 3) what if they got the stop safely now message while driving it.

Either way it seems completely unprofessional to drive a customers car without telling them an hour away for it to be serviced.

Am I being unreasonable? Also as of now it’s STILL hasn’t been looked at.

I think it's unprofessional they didn't realize they couldn't do the repair until they got the part in, the instructions state what equipment they need.

I think it's a bit unreasonable.
They needed to get the car there. Tow-Drive-Push, whatever. Driving is much better IMO

What if a rock hits his windshield or bumper? what if someone rear-ends the car?
Driving a customer's car for an hour is a lot! lots of things can go wrong, I expect them to ask me first!

It's typical that a dealer drives your car around during evaluation and after repair. My neighbor is a mechanic at the local Nissan dealership and I have seen him come home in cars he has worked on because he was testing them after repairs. He's 30 minutes from work...

It's not your girlfriend. It's just a car. Cars are supposed to be driven.
If anythings happens then I'd expect them to cover it.
It has to be driven anyway. Do you expect them to call you for permission to test drive it after the parts are installed? Seems silly to me.

It is completely unprofessional to not tell someone how you are using their equipment.

Transparency and honesty, something that almost no dealerships have, and will be the eventual end of the business model.

The point is that this wasn't for testing purposes. It was cutting corners, which this dealership appears to love to do.

Perhaps. Not worth my time to argue.
The OP asked if it was unreasonable to be upset. I think it is a little bit unreasonable to get worked up over something like that. It is VERY common for a service shop to take a vehicle to a different location for specialized work. In this case, they wanted to lift the car with their special jig to drop the battery. Seems quite reasonable to me. Much better than trying to wing it with their 4 poster at the first place and then drop the car. Better to drive it than tow it too. All sorts of bad things can happen just by towing the car incorrectly.

I agree, I mean if I bring my car to a tire shop I see them zip out after to test, its assumed, they are businesses with insurance, anything happens you are covered.

I think Steve is correct, but I think the dealership should have clearly communicated what was happening with the car. That is what I think is reasonable to be upset about.

The car is private property and it does not belong to the dealership. It belongs to Rosario. The dealership has a responsibility to clearly and accurately explain what they plan to do with Rosario's property, and when they plan to do it.

Expecting them to cover anything happens is one thing, actually covering it is a complete different story, me dropping the car for them to fix something, I expect them to test drive the car after they finish to confirm the issue went away, I don't expect them to drive my faulty car from San Diego to Los Angeles so another dealer can fix it!

a test drive is completely different from an hour ride in faulty car to get it fixed somewhere else.

In the current climate where parts are back ordered and they don’t have any estimates of when they can get even the simplest of supplies, I expect they would not take a risk of something else breaking where my three weeks of waiting so far potentially run into months.
Also they specifically told me they were towing it. Instead they drive my car for an hour to another state without informing me. Would o have said no? Of course not but it would be nice to be told. Also it would be nice if they told me three weeks ago they were not equipped to handle my repair so I could have driven 20 minutes from my house to another dealership owned by another company. Instead they went to their dealership which was an hour away and in another state.

I didn’t provide all the details but I’ve been very patient with them when they couldn’t provide a loaner and I had to go rent a beat up Rav 4. I didn’t lose patience with them when I kept calling for a status and they kept telling me people couldn’t talk to me because they were ā€œin trainingā€ (this literally happened 5 times). I also didn’t lose patience when they told me the tech would work on it the next day when they knew full well they didn’t have the right equipment to do the work. Hell I even didn’t lose patience when I had to educate them on simple EV stuff. But after this I finally had it. What’s worse is that I had the car in for the 10k mile check a week before the problem and they said everything was fine. How did they even check the car if they don’t have a loft for EVs?
