Looks like Tesla is rejoining the L2 market with their home charger. The connector has been swapped for a J1772, and is priced less than most of the other premium connected chargers at $550, which is still $150 more than what they sell the Tesla version at. People who have the Tesla version love it (really no choice if you want to charge your Tesla at home), but seems solidly built, and has been on the market for a while.

Seems like a move in preparation for moving over to the standard CCS plug for Tesla.

Fingers crossed. Give me that supercharger access.

Or expanding into a market segment they see as growing exponentially faster than just Tesla's. At this price they will get a lot of purchases by people looking for smart chargers.

It’s certainly worth keeping in mind if my old EVSE ever breaks down. 🤷‍♂️🐩

Tesla's been in and out of this market for a while now. They were selling a J1772 wall connector a year ago, but not for long before they pulled it. Maybe it will last longer this time.

Damn, I had seen this last year when was available for a week or so but I had only just ordered my car at that point so I didn't bother ordering it thinking it would continue to be available. Now 2 weeks after my refurbished Grizzle and 2 days after my car was delivered it is available again. Doh!

My reason for wanting this charger was that it had the option to hardwire with a conduit entry from above. I was hoping for the "cleanish" look but settled for the flexibility of a 14-50 outlet for now.

Grizzl-e are good, just not smart, I got a chargepoint because it was on the list of approved charger for my utility co. to sign up for a annual rebate to allow them to control the charger during peak periods. The Tesla is $200 cheaper than the that, I would have bought this.

I bought one of the Tesla J1772 models (which was Gen 2) last year and tried to powershare with a regular Tesla charger (Gen 2) but it wouldn't work and I couldn't get any help from Tesla tech support. This new one is Gen 3 so maybe it will work with the Gen 3 Tesla version. If I was in the marker for a connector, I'd buy a pair of those J1772 Gen 3s in a heart beat.

They're getting ready to attack the commercial market: https://www.tesla.com/support/commercial . If they can get apartments to install it, the owner makes money off of charging, Tesla gets a cut (they could even link charging to smart grid FlexAlerts), and I'm sure it has something to do with money from the infrastructure bill

I understand that this is the Gen 3 unit. It doesn’t provide a plug, so I either hard wire or buy my own plug. Is this right?

Typically by electrical code 48A requires hardwire. You can go upto 50A circuit - 40A charging with a plug. 48A Charging requires a 60A hardwired circuit.

The module can be lowered to 12A-40A. So I wouldn’t automatically take that as a given, especially that Tesla doesnt separately sell chargers of different max amperages.

But I guess the answer is yes.
