Cheapest Mach E though is $51k, a Toyota Rav4 XLE hybrid, will cost you $37k, will give you nearly 40mpg so ....
If I wanted a RAV4 hybrid last year, I would've bought a RAV4 hybrid last year. Actually, I would've opted for the Prime. But I wanted a Mach-E, so I got a Mach-E. If I was looking to save a lot of money, I would've kept driving the 17-year old Prius I had and not bought a new car at all.

I've avg'd 3.3 to 3.8 for the last decade I've been driving electric. I charge on EV super off peak which is just about 7 cents a kw. I surely don't pay nearly $12 per hundred miles. Closer to $2.35 at 3.5
I love how these articles are always Ca power prices, or Norway... Come on. Take it out to my sisters place in Tx 2.5 cent a kW/h. 🕺 These idiots don't even bother to try to avg the electric costs across the country.

Who wants to push ICE drivers to think even less of EV's? Automotive 'news' places.
Did you agree to a higher peak rate to ‘get’ the 7¢ off-peak rate.

That was/is the “deal” here in PEPCO land.

Didn’t make sense given our scenario.

...it's all downhill after high school.
Dunno about you, but my life got way better after high school... And way better after college. And way better after my first job out of college...

Yes. There is a slightly higher on peak time. But they also give you a 3 month trial. If it's higher you can switch back to the other plan with no issues. However out electricity bill doubles in Summer because 110+ daily temps are the norm. But the pool pump and car charging are 2 of the 3 big KW consumers in my house so they run after 11pm in the summer.
It's a fine line. Previously I was only topping off a 32kW/H battery. Seldomly went below 20% on it. Scheduled charges at midnight (because gen1 charging software from was really terrible) 6.6kw/h EVSE so it wasn't going to be painful. It takes much longer for me to go from 25% to 80% on the MME with that same 6.6kw/h. Was thinking about upgrading my EVSE but was looking for an article to make me feel bad about that choice and to factor that in to the reasons I should have bought another ICE. Oh look article found lol

My extended range Mach E holds about 100 KW. In this part of Minnesota a KW costs a little under $.15. So to filler up costs about $15. and I get a little discount for being a senior citizen, 72. Also last year the state just approved a 6 to 8 % increase for electrical rates. Utilities are regulated in this state. This year, the utilities were going to ask for another 6 to 8% but that got negotiated away when the Public Utility Commission approved an "accounting " change for electric Utilities and we have it all, nuclear, gas, coal, hydro, windmills, solar farms.( Isn't it curious, the government regulates utility rates but no one regulates oil company rates.? )

20 gallons of gas costs about $70. A 20 MPG Ice car with 20 gallon tank will go about 400 miles at about $.175 per mile, gas cost. At 3 m/kw Mach e costs about $.05 or a nickel a mile.

My early pre purchase cost per mile calculations that suggested an EV was about 1/3 of the cost per mile vs an ICE vehicle. So far that still seems to be true. Unless my math is really screwed up, I just can't see the logic to the conclusion of the study.

PS: And yes, I fully understand average range drops quite a bit, up here in the frozen tundra, in the winter, but it still looks like EV is the cheapest way to go, provided your travel lifestyle and expectations do not significantly exceed/conflict with the realities of your EV range and charging availability.

Looks like you could save by switching to Geico.
Or lying and saying you don't have an EV. The nonsense is real.
That charge is applied to all rate payers regardless of electric vehicle ownership .

"The public policy charges are mandated by state and federal governments. Some of the line items on your bill that fall into this category are:

  • energy efficiency,
  • renewable energy,
  • electric vehicle charge, and
  • distributed solar charge."

I do not know my home charging rate however, at 4.27 per gallon (premium) and a highway average of 25mpg, I am confident that I pay less than $17.08 to charge to the percentage to cover 100 miles.

Seems like way too much different math used.

Why not use something simple, like “miles per dollar.”

Did the math for Florida. Based on average cost, EPA range and 10% charging losses….. I get 18 miles per dollar.

Pretty easy to compare that math. At $3/gallon that’s 54 MPGe.

Charging 100% at home of course.

I recommend you look into Dominion Virginia Power's 2d meter EV TOU Program. I've used it since 2012 and at night (only for your permanently wired EVSE) the cost is 5.3 cents.
do you have a link to anything on their site about that?

my house doesn't have a "smart" meter yet, so my billing options are limited.

Attached here is the information magnet from Dominion Virginia Power. The URL and the phone # are on the bottom.

Back when Governor McDonnell grabbed a bunch of Federal "shovel-ready" money, he had the State pay for a 2d electric meter to the house... purely for this program. Dominion VA Power came and verified that the line from this 2d meter was permanent and dedicated only to the EVSE. I only paid for the line installation.

I've (we the family) been using this across four plug-in hybrids and now pure EVs. It is a great program - already more than paid for itself.

yeah if that's the program mentioned at the bottom of this page, it is no longer offered. Only customers on the plan already can continue.

as far as I can tell the only variable rate plan dominion offers is a general off-peak plan which you can only do IF you have a smart meter, which I do not.

Anderson Economic Group are either
1) dishonest
2) morons

possibly a combination of the two.

Either way, the greatest impact of their study is to destroy their credibility.
One of the things they're counting is installing the EVSE and circuit at home. That often costs upwards of $1500. But it appears they might be amortizing that over just the 12k miles of the study. That inflates it. They should be amortizing over like 100k miles.

I get about 2.3 mi/KWH. My home electricity cost is $0.1129 / KWH. That works out to $4.91 for 100 miles.

looks like it, as well as edge case electric rates...

Yep. By just eyeballing the bars, looks like they're using around 20c/kWh, which would be a state on the higher end (although maybe not this month after the recent electricity price jumps).

They also seem to be adding a little for EV registration fees that attempt to mimic the gas tax for road funding.
