Hello All,

I have searched for this and didn't find what I thought were fully relevant to what I have going on. Yesterday I noticed when coming out to my garage while the vehicle was preconditioning I could hear an audible buzzing noise coming from the front of the vehicle. After some looking around I determined it was related to my HVAC system. At first I noticed that it wouldn't do it if the vehicle was only powered up enough to just run radio and other things, but when the vehicle was all the way on the noise came back. So last night after I took another look at it and determined this noise to only come back if I am running only on defrost. If I add in the regular vents along with defrost the noise isn't present and it's not present with only cabin vents. Just bought it back in January, it's a 2023 with just a little over 600 miles on it. Any thoughts to why this noise is coming from just running on defrost by itself?

Thanks a bunch.

That’s the A/C compressor running. Normal. You mustn’t had it very long. Compressor will run when it’s above 32°F at times.

So the compressor is running while defrost is on by itself? So does that mean it's running AC without running the AC? Like to pull moisture out? And no, I've had it about 6 weeks.

I think it's supposed to. Does anyone want to turn on there mach e and run only defrost to see what type of noise you hear outside the cabin? Sorry EV newbie here.

Mine does this too when the heater kicks in. Reminds me of that computer fan that's about had it, when you have to bang the case to get it to stop.

Thank you for your reply Mauser. I appreciate it and feel slightly better about it. It was just alarming to hear it because the other times I've let it pre-condition I've always come out to a quiet car (lightly humming) and could hear the inside vents running. But lately my windows were fogging up as I was driving so I have been running defrost only and that was sufficient, but since I am in the car before I start it up and all I may have just been missing out on the noise before.

Compressor will run if:
  • Outside temp is >32ÂşF AND
  • Defrost mode is selected,
  • Cabin humidity is too high,
  • Or if A/C is turned on
The previous times it didn't run it was either too cold, the cabin wasn't very humid, or you weren't using a defrost mode.

Well it was definitely lower than 32 F yesterday so that probably wasn't part of it. We just received about 10 inches of snow. Lol. Mach-Lee, I really really appreciate the info!!!

Your garage is probably warmer than outside by some amount. It goes by the current temp measured on the front bumper. The temperature on the display isn't updated in park, so it could say 26Âş from previously, but the sensor could be reading 34Âş at the moment and start the A/C.

Hi there, Clayton. This defrost noise concern doesn’t sound like something we want you to experience with your Mach-E. Could you please send us a PM with your VIN and the name and location of your Ford dealer? I'd be happy to look into how I can assist you on my end.

Waste of time. Your car operates as normal the Ford bot will just waste your time even more do not bother replying to them…

AC compressor is exactly what you’re describing and like mach_lee said will turn on in defrost only even when pretty cold out.
