What would make you cancel your Mach-E reservation and buy something else?

While I appreciate the pun, I did clarify that I was using "soul" as a synonym for that "je ne sais quois" (literally French for "I do not know what") that people get from looking at a car that they personally like.

For me, the no comparison comes with the "soul" of the vehicle. Kona didn't start life as an EV, it's a pretty classic case of compliance car (not that they didn't nail it...it's probably the best of the compliances I've seen...). Some people probably love the styling of the Kona and are happy to have it in EV form. I respect that Ford is going all-in with its most iconic badging. I had a 2003 Mustang GT and absolutely LOVED it...but it's not comfortable for 5 people...which didn't stop 20-something year old me from cramming three friends in the back seat on a few occasions. Not every vehicle's styling/soul/DNA/whatever appeals to everyone, and so in my mind, there isn't really a comparison between the Kona, well executed compliance car though it may be, and the Mustang Mach-E which maintains some of that Mustang DNA while being built from the ground up to be an EV and nothing else.

YMMV. :)
Well stated. No question that the Mach-e is a whole level above the Kona EV.

But to be fair, that's what $10k-$15k more buys. That's the approximate difference between a mid-spec Kona EV and a mid-spec Mach-e.

Exactly right. And that is why I would keep my mind open to the savings as one possible avenue. At the same time, I often don't like to compromise on purchases like these, because for example, I spend so much time in my car, the "niceties" make a difference in the quality of my life. So, money, a real concern, vs, je ne sais quois. Again, embarrassing first world problems. So lucky to be able to consider these issues.

Audi e-tron is now eligible for discounts thru Costco.
Jaguar I-PACE for awhile had some aggressive discounts.
Bolt EV had a crazy factory incentive that had me considering one on lease for less than $200/mo with $2k down.

I have not seen much in the way of discounts for the Niro EV in my state and rumor is that the Kona Electric is not really discounted in states you can buy it.

Clearly, none of that pricing swayed me to change my reservation. At this point, it's Tesla's Battery & Drivetrain Day that I'm most keen to know more about. Depending on what Elon Musk reveals, I could cancel and go with Tesla.

I think if Hyundai had managed to sell the Ioniq EV in my state during these last few years, at a good price (closer to the Ioniq PHEV price), I'd have switched over to that without hesitation. It's got more occupant space than the Kona, and I think it looks a little better. But they only sell them in ZEV states and even then, in small quantities. I also found Ioniq PHEV appealing, but it's also not sold here, and I'd rather just get rid of the combustion engine altogether. Also, I've driven the Niro PHEV (it's largely the same as Ioniq PHEV) and the Kona EV, and neither was exhilarating at all. They're both just very practical.

Then I saw the reveal for Mustang Mach-E and other than price, that won me over easily. I like the MME styling a lot more, especially the interior. It has more "soul" as you've all mentioned, inside and out. Range is great, even with the standard battery. It's got less range than Kona but more power. And the included technology sounds absolutely amazing, if it turns out as Ford has been promising.

This thread has rekindled my interest in the Polestar 2. TBH I like the profile more than the E...though based on the fact that my last three new vehicles were Volvos (last model V60, S90 and now XC90) I suspect I'm a bit biased. I want to love the E, but I don't...though I do think it's handsome.

The R1S is still my lead contender, but considering we just got the XC90 and have it for a 3 year lease I'm increasingly thinking a sedan/CUV would be the better option...plus it gives Rivian time to prove out the model and work out their kinks...

Options and choices - both a blessing and a curse.

You can also just try the Polestar 2 for just a year by doing their subscription service. Same with Fisker Ocean (but I don't think Fisker will ever come to market).

I just bought a Model 3. But I’m changing jobs and no longer will have a company car. Keeping my Mach-e reservation though. Just keeping options open.

Trying the Polestar subscriptions service is a genius idea!

To reinterate and amplify my reasons for cancelling my MACH e reservation:
1. Most important is cost of on-the-road charging. Unless Ford states and guarantees we will have charging rates (through EA I guess) of no more that $0.30 a kWh and no charge-by-time obviously, I am out. Period.
2. Next, if there is price creep or range down-creep, I am out.
3. Finally, if my Dealer adds a front license plate frame when Ford did not, I'm out.

You can certainly find locations to charge for less than 30 cents per kWh. But not with EA in CA. You're looking at $0.50 or $0.70 per minute. Best case, this is 43.5 cents per kWh, and just for a short subsection of the battery's capacity.

If you are concerned with Electrify America charging specifically, and with its cost, then you should reverse your reservation and get your cash back.

I guess I should clarify: "less than $0.30 a kWh" presumes SuperCharging like Tesla.
$0.44 and up is like buying a petro car knowing gas is about $6-7 a gallon. Crazy!

That strikes me as an unfair analogy.

I'm considering buying the Mustang Mach-E, knowing that 99.9% of charging will occur at home.

I'm considering Electrify America (and all of the other charging networks) as an extra benefit that may enable certain road trips. On those rare trips, I'd happily pay their current rates.
