I didn't want to have to worry about the tailgate opening when I didn't want it to, so I just disabled it. I wish Hyundai/Kia just took the safer approach and used kick to open like Ford and many others have.

That's not what we're talking about. Toyotas have the ability to automatically turn on the 360 camera every time the car's speed falls BELOW 9 mph, which is great for parking. This requires a button press in most other cars (including Fords).
