Above all, Ford wants to sell motor vehicles.

Some years ago, It became apparent Ford was going to enter the EV market, more than just to make a ho-hum compliance vehicle, so they decided to go all in. Ford knew it had to compete with Tesla. The best sellers for the market in general, these days, are crossovers. Elon knew this; so did Jim Farley. Thus Ford knows it has to compete the Model Y. To compete successfully in the EV market, Ford put its best player on the consumer playing field, the Mustang, not the second team Escape. Ford is planning to win. You win with the Mustang name. That my friends is why Ford badged what is otherwise a four door crossover, the Mustang Mach-E.

My original game plan was to replace my escape with a hopes-for black-label Corsair. It turned out that ford was never going to make a black label of the next generation Corsair, so I was going to resign myself to holding out for a black label next generation nautilus. I’d vaguely followed the press and knew ford was working on an EV, but figured it was some dumb compliance vehicle, primarily for the euros where they were in serious trouble with the stupid European regulations. I watched the webcast out of curiosity because of the buzz in the press (which I thought was just bs hype).
When I saw the webcast and the Mustang Mach E, the escape/Lincoln replacement plans basically went out the window. The only reason I didn’t pull the trigger on the night of the webcast is I was agonizing over whether to get the extended range battery, or if I should really go all-in and wait for the GT. (I would have failed the marshmallow test as a little kid). After a week of indecision, I pulled the trigger on my car and now own my first Mustang ?

And I figured if Ford was willing to risk the Mustang name they couldn't afford to design and produce a "ho-hum" vehicle. That's why I bought in and I don't regret my decision.

And that is the exact reason why I was willing buy my Mustang Mach E. Ford was willing to risk it’s 2 most valuable names (F-150 and Mustang) so it was safer to risk it.
I have zero regrets. I know before I read about I was looking at a Honda Pilot or Passport. The Mustang Mach Eis very different and zero regrets. My wife was only going along with it originally to delay the new car conversion a year Now she love it as wants her EV.

My thought exactly. wonder if it was going to be front wheel drive only.
The early rumors were that it was going to be FWD. I don’t recall hearing any AWD rumors, but maybe I’m misremembering.

This was the original Ford all electric vehicle concept prior to Ford adding the Mustang name to the platform.

After the Mustang name was added, the entire concept project was rebuilt into what we have now. And I'm glad Ford did it!

It looks like they took some HEAVY design cues from Tesla on the front end in the concept.

Wow, had that original came to fruition, ZERO chance I would have bought one. Glad they styled it, because the Mach-E looks great.

I don't understand most EV makers (cough, cough Tesla, and Chevy Bolt, others), why do you think EVs need to be the ugliest looking vehicles on the planet?

Form follows function. That shapes gives a lower drag coefficient = longer range.

It's all good until they named it a Mustang. As an owner and all-in EV guy the only regret I have is buying a car with the mustang name. It's a great car but the fan base has made it a displeasure to be in at times. They should have used a different name. It's the one and only serious flaw in the car.
