I got my winter wheels wrapped in Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV tires today.

They're up in their perch for the summer, ready to come out and play in about 6 months.

Just ordered my winter wheel/tire kit yesterday. 20" wheels with Pirelli P-Zero winter tires. On back order, but should be delivered 12/8.

I just had the pirelli PZero winter tires installed on my GTPE. The ride is a bit bumpier than with the summer tires. Is that normal?

I installed the winter setup today. I think they look pretty good on the car. Petrol P5A 19x8 5x108 +40 wheels with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV tires and cloned Autel MX TPMS sensors.

You and I have identical spec Mach-E's! How did you find the extra width of this wheel/tire affected your range? I was really hoping to get some nice Fastwheel EV01+ wheels for summer but they only come in 19"x7.5" or 19"x8.5". The stock 19" wheels that come with the premium are 19"x7" so I am worried that deviating from this would hurt my range more than the gains I would get from the EV wheels.

My range took a nosedive, but that had more to do with the winter weather than the wheels.

OK, so I just experienced a very odd event with my 2021 Mach-E GT PE tire/wheel swap and the whole TPMS re-learn process.

On Sunday, I swapped out my winter tires/wheels for the summer tires/wheels (I have two sets, both Ford OEM wheels and sensors). It was late in the day, and I planned to re-learn the TPMS the next day. I did drive the vehicle that Sunday night after the swap out, but the display still showed the previous winter tire pressures without any updates or changes. It also did not show any type of TPMS errors or communication issues. It showed this incorrect old pressure even as I shut down the ignition.

The next day (Monday), as soon as I started the car, the display showed the new summer tire pressures, and in the correct positions. I know that this was correct because I purposely kept one tire pressure below the recommended level to make sure that the positioning was taking place. Very odd that it did not seem to automatically re-learn when driving the vehicle (various speeds, 20 minutes, more that one trip), but seemed to re-learn overnight without being plugged in.

On a side note. My old Ford TPMS trigger device (small gray one with the green button) does not work on either set of Mach-E OEM sensors...

That really only tells you that one of the sensors is in the correct position. To be sure, you'd have to do the same test with the other 3. But if you're going to be letting air out of the tires anyway, you might as well just do the position relearn.

This just gets more and more curious...

To test your theory about automatic correct sensor positioning, I let some air out of another tire while the vehicle was sitting in a parking lot with the ignition off. Then, I entered the vehicle, turned on the ignition, and it showed the reduced pressure on the tire in question. And I did not even take the vehicle out of park !

So, some observations and theories (not facts) from all of this, at least for my particular vehicle, 2021 Mach-E GT PE, November 2021 build:
  • The Ford OEM TPMS sensors for my vehicle send out a signal (i.e., trigger) when there is a (sudden) change in tire pressure, even if the vehicle is not moving; and/or
  • The Ford OEM TPMS sensors are force triggered by the vehicle itself after some period of time, communication loss, or when the ignition is turned on; and/or
  • The Ford OEM TPMS sensors may have a time-related trigger function that sends out a signal (possibly a hand shake check-in signal) every once in a while; and/or
  • The vehicle does have the ability to train itself automatically with new TPMS sensors and identify their correct position (at least with the Ford OEM sensors).
All that I can say for sure is that I did not perform any re-learn or training procedure on the vehicle after I swapped out the winter/summer wheels that had a different set of TPMS sensors, and that the vehicle somehow figured it out by itself. It took some time, but did it without any intervention...

My old 2015 Mustang GT used to do this re-learn completely automatically too, but you had to drive it above 20 mph for about 3 to 4 minutes. My neighbor's 2015 Mustang GT did not, for some reason.
