I wouldn't say not real, but is it not just a little strange that the official numbers are so close to estimates from a year ago?
I don't think so, the goal of an estimate is to be accurate. So I'd say those who made the estimate should get to keep their jobs!

Plus on the other side of things, those developing the product had a target, which they aimed for, and hit... So they keep should get to keep their jobs too... (Even the one who overshot it just a smidge).

I won't be embarrassed driving around in my standard range Mach-E. I'll be happy to have not spent an extra $5,000+ on a capability that will never pay itself back for me.

I doubt your "pay more now or get less later" conclusion will bear fruit.
An additionnal $7,000 in Canada for a few road trips a year, not worthed for me either.

You would expect the ER to be less efficient than the SR due to the increased weight. Does anybody have an idea why physics doesn't apply to the MME?
Weight will have an effect on start/stop driving, and cornering but not steady state cruising. That would be more bound by aero.

Think about it, 210 means you’re on a ~100 mile leash from home in ideal conditions . That’s a big ask if you’re not in a metropolitan area with abundant charging.
I've been thinking about it for years now. I considered buying a Model S in 2013. Bought the Fiesta instead. It's very fuel efficient but obviously still burning gas... I couldn't stomach the cost for going all electric back then.

Anything with a 150+ mile range would be fine for me. I drive an average of 40 miles per day. 150 is a lot more than 40.

Other more reasonable options appeared, like the Hyundai Ioniq Electric and the Kia Niro EV. But not really available outside of ZEV states. After more research, I eliminated Tesla. Bolt's available here, but I don't care much for its looks or what you get for the cost.

Even Tesla won’t sell you such a car with such poor range and Porsche went out of their way to say their 201 miles doesn’t tell the full story. My guess is the take rate on that will be really low.
Tesla won't sell me anything. I'm not interested in their vehicles at this time.

The Porsche Taycan is *stunning* and from everything I've read, it is pure joy to drive. But it's also too impractical for me.

Given the Taycan is $100k+, is that worth it? Not saying your points aren't valid, but are they twice as good?

No idea. Not only does the $100k-200k price tag push me away, but the thoughts of owning a vehicle like that... I would be really upset about any little ding. Also, being a German luxury car, I'd expect maintenance and service costs to be very high.

I need the range and AWD. Regular 200+ mile one-way trips. In winter and freeway speeds, I’ll take all the range I can get. And a daily roundtrip commute (non-Covid) of 120 miles with no convenient at work charging (plus home charging is cheaper.)

Have you actually tried an trip with an BEV? This is similar to an argument that I see at work where theory != reality.

I drove a Bolt from SF to Reno. Had to stop twice, high grades take a toll on BEV range. Both were crowded, and that ONE stop took a cool hour before I could go.

Had a Model 3 from LA to SD. Similar story as above, but on top of that chargers were routinely paywalled off. Eventually I said F it and paid for a valet tip and a $10 cup of tea I didn’t want just to get a plug.

I don’t have to deal with any of that for a conventional ICE car and a lot of people don’t have the patience for that. Until that is resolved BEV ownership would only be a niche.

I'm following you on all this until the last sentence.

The vast majority of my driving is within the metro area. The vast majority of my charging will be at the fuel station that happens to be attached to my home -- where the car is parked nightly anyway.

For an occasional road trip, if charging locations are inconvenient or non-existent, I'll have Enterprise pick me up.

For people who road trip a lot, or have much longer commutes, the situation will be different.
