I don’t recall reading anything about how long the 250 (or 500) kWh included with purchase are good for. Could a person not use them for a couple years until taking a long road trip?

BLUF - Monthly access fees exist, but frequent DCFC use may give a better ROI.

No doubt this is commonly available knowledge so bear with me. I have an EA membership separate from the FP account. From what I've observed, their pricing model (at least from what I can tell) has two tiers. A free tier doesn't carry a monthly membership fee, but carries higher at-the-plug rates (i.e.: 45¢/kWh vs 35¢/kWh [not actual rates]) for charging and idling (plugged in, not charging). If you're a frequent user of DCFC, the paid tier has a monthly access fee of something like $4-5. No doubt this is subject to change of course.
