MME has been categorized as a car since it's debut. Seems strange.

It does appear to be that, yes. Bummer for all the 2023 deliveries...

Makes absolutely no sense that the Escape is classified as an SUV and the Mach-E isn't. They're basically the same size.
Agreed!

Escape PHEV weighs less, has less cubic feet of storage, etc...

MME should be classified as "mini or small SUV / CUV"....

Unfortunately, it’s what the IRS thinks that matters.
I wonder how many people are going to take delivery and not realize this until next tax season?

And, how many are going to not go through with the purchase, leaving the dealers with cars people don't want?

Of course some of the buyers, as evidenced by their social media posts, are not going to make the income cutoff anyway...

and unfortunately this is even worse than leaving it up to taxpayers to determine (in which case you may be able to use various sources as backup when audited).

here they have specifically made a determination to the contrary

the only hope is a revision down the road. they are missing many manufacturers on here for example, so it seems like everything is in the works

Not exactly. The IRS didn't classify cars before. The EPA classified the 2021 MME as a small station wagon, but changed the classification to a small SUV for 2022.

Wasn't the 2022 MY MME classified as "Small SUV" ??
By the EPA, yes. The belief was that the IRS would use the EPA classifications, but they don't have to. We can hope that the list on the IRS website isn't final, but it certainly looks that way.

I make the income cutoff and was looking forward to picking up my '23 MME Premium next month with the battery requirement waived.

Now, I won't make the purchase, even with a $6500 PCO ('22->'23).

How ironic: my '23 MME is $1275 over the max MSRP:
