Good news!!! After almost 4 months to the day, I got the car back in what looks and feels like a new car.

1/27 - Accident. No airbags, low speed crash on some black ice into a wall.

2/2 - initial estimate of 10k

2/8 - initial tear down and first insurance payment

2/23 - full tear down and additional supplemental to insurance for another 20k

3/7 - insurance approves and paid the supplemental, parts ordered

3/17 - most parts are in, rebuild begins

3/31 - car is sent to local dealer to do battery tray swap.

4/5 - get email with the following:

We actually just spoke (to the dealer).. the battery needs replaced. Not the EV battery just the normal one in order for them to do their calibration.

4/6 - car is back to body shop awaiting air guide on the bumper and a hood stop. Things are looking good!

4/18 - parts are in, car is back together, but the IPMA module ā€œwent badā€ while they were recalibrating the car. New one is ordered.

4/20 - replacing the IPMA did not resolve the issue. Car goes back for the dealer for diagnosis. A different module isnā€™t working. The part is on ā€œNational back orderā€

5/17 - sensor / module finally comes in

5/19 - car is sent back to the body shop after module and recalibration

5/23 - Dealer didnā€™t reinstall grille cowl correctly and it is missing clips. Body shop is told that the my need to order whole new cowl because they donā€™t sell the clips individually.

5/25 - cowl comes inā€¦with no clips. Body shop goes to local dealer to get them to match the clips in their part department successfully.

5/26 - car is done and looks awesome. Boy did I miss driving this thing šŸ˜

The beauty of modern technology is that accidents should, in theory, be less frequent. The curse is that even minor damage becomes a major ordeal to repair, it seems. I'm glad you are reunited with your vehicle, but this story and others like it made me dread the prospect of getting into any sort of fender bender, even if it would be mild.

One of the most amazing engineering feats in modern automobiles has been the shift toward cars that protect the passenger cabin in an impact. To do this, cars are designed to absorb all of that energy, usually by crumpling and disintegrating. It means that even low speed impacts can do significant damage to the car, but those repair bills are a lot better than the injuries and deaths that have been avoided.

Happy your baby is back! Quesition - what roof cross bars do you have? I assume that you keep them on permanently?

After all the discussion lately about Ford moving to the Tesla charge port in the future, I found your last image of the exposed CCS charge port assembly especially interesting.

I doesn't take much. Uninsured "motorist" backed into me in a parking lot. Quarter panel, bumper, tail light, wheel trim - $8,000.

45k!? Wow they should have totaled that -- bet they would have if they knew the final bill. It was worth ~30k at auction.

Theyā€™re Thule Aero bars. I like them, the range hit seem negligible (without a load). I have on rare occasions, caught my head on the bar getting out of the car. I had meant to take them off in the fall, we really only use them to carry surfboards in the summer.

Without a doubt it would have been totaled. Iā€™m glad I took it to where I did. They knew how to play the game.

Right. I don't envy anyone who is at fault in a two car accident with a BEV. Glad the OP got their car back. Amazing that hot mess of engineering can be repaired.

Will it be much different if it is a modern ICE car like a Lexus or BMW?
