lol...that's it? So, on Auto2, fan speed can go up to 2 if necessary? And Auto3, that fan can go up to 3 if necessary? Or the fan stays on the speed as it is set the whole time?

I think it stays the same speed that auto is set on. If that is too much you can change the speed with the auto button.

The auto number doesn't have any direct correlation to a fan speed number, at least not according to the manual. It's just about how noisy you want it to be (or don't want it to be).

Honestly though, the Mach-E HVAC system is one of the worst I've had. Its auto mode is complete garbage and I constantly have to redirect air to defrost or make adjustments - despite it saying it blows on the windshield in cold temps. My 4Runner from almost 10 years ago had a WAY better auto climate control. I only ever touched that if I wanted to go up or down 1 or 2 degrees. I NEVER had to worry about where the air was or wasn't blowing.

Correct, Auto has no correlation with the fan speed settings (1 through 10/11). Those settings are a MANUAL OVERRIDE OF Auto. Auto's 3 settings are fan speed ranges that it uses in Auto mode. 3 blows the most air, 1 the least. None are close to the top speed of the manual fan setting.

So you have to set a fan speed for auto temp? Most other cars have auto fan along with auto temp.

It does auto adjust the fan speed - but think about it kind of like on Auto 1 it might only use fan speeds 1-4 to keep the noise down. And on Auto 2 it might only use like fan speeds 4-7 or something. And so on.

Though I agree, it seems kind of unnecessary if auto is really "auto". If the temperature difference is large, the fan will be faster and louder for a few minutes while things equalize and eventually the fan will slow down and be quieter when the cabin is closer to the temp you set. That's how auto should work. No need for Auto-Low, Auto-Med, and Auto-Hi... just let auto be auto. If the fan is "loud" for a few minutes, well, no shit. It's working to set the temperature you told it to set.

I'm sorry does anyone not just leave it on auto 3, I rarely have an issue, I've had fogged windows like twice anywhere from single digits to > 100, and that's fixed by the gratuitous max defrost button. If it's cold set it in the high 60's if it's hot low 70's. Auto will use the most energy efficient way to achieve the temp you set. This is almost always heat at lower vents and air conditioning in the upper vents.

Honestly the BIGGEST issues with auto 3 is the car gets a tad stuffy if you have 5 high respirators in the car, that's my biggest gripe, but this can be fixed with the..wait for it..max defrost button.

However it is pretty efficient I would imagine if the humidity is >100% and you leave the doors open for 20 minutes I can imagine it's going to struggle for a time.

Other cars have auto fan speed only. Temp is always set manually by the user.

Auto does seem like a misnomer here. What the Mustang is really giving us is a choice of three manually selectable fan speeds. But they call it auto.

I like having the "Auto-Low" option readily available. Sometimes the loud fan noise is far more annoying than waiting longer for the set temperature.

But it is kind of odd to label this manual selection as "Auto"...

Eh it's a little a bit of a basal speed and how hard it tries.

Think of it as LOW, MED, or HI fan speed setting. Fan speed is still variable in each of the three AUTO modes based on conditions.

Personally, I use AUTO 1 or AUTO 2 most of the time to save energy. I only use AUTO 3 if I’m hot or cold. 3 is also louder.

The latest HVAC strategy is pretty good in the winter about fogging. I encourage everybody to use AUTO mode as much as possible. If you start adjusting things manually, you’re going to be less efficient, and possibly wasting heat due to non-optimal settings. The car can adjust things with more granularity (such as mix door positions and fan speed) than I can to maintain optimal performance.

Worst thing you can do in the winter is crank up the fan speed or use defrost when you don’t need it. Then you’re gonna be cold.
