Ford Continues to Expand BlueOval™ Charge Network, Adding Three New Charging Providers to Surpass 106,000 Chargers

Ford Mustang Mach-E BlueOval Charge Network Adds Three Charging Providers to Surpass 106,000 Chargers Mustang Mach-E Chargin

  • Ford adds Francis Energy, Blink and soon-to-be Red E charging providers to the BlueOval™ Charge Network, further growing North America’s largest public charging network to more than 106,000 chargers, including 11,800 DC fast chargers
  • The new network additions build on continued network growth throughout the U.S. and Canada and support automatic charger routing via the FordPass App and through Charge Assist, which locates, navigates and activates payment for in-network chargers from your vehicle's infotainment screen
  • Ford was first to announce it is providing electric vehicle (EV) drivers future access to Tesla Superchargers which are growing in number; Ford will add more than 15,000 reliable DC fast chargers to its BlueOval Charge Network starting in the spring of 2024
  • Ford Model e dealers prepare for installations of DC fast chargers to the BlueOval Charge Network in 2024

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 24, 2023 – Today Ford announced an expansion update of more than 22,000 chargers to the BlueOval™ Charge Network, bringing the new network total to more than 106,000 chargers – and growing. The company is now adding access to three new charging providers: Francis Energy, Blink and soon-to-be Red E, further expanding convenient charging options for Ford EV customers across the U.S. and Canada with embedded charger routing and simple payment options via the FordPass® App.

The addition of the new charging providers, along with continued growth from existing charging network participants, includes more than 1,700 new DC fast-chargers and more than 20,300 Level 2 chargers since Ford’s last charger count update in May. The network now includes access to more than 11,800 fast-chargers, with plans for significant additional DC fast-charger growth starting in the Spring of 2024.

The addition of Blink, Francis Energy and Red E bring more than 10,000 new chargers to the network, including more than 550 new DC fast chargers. The remaining BlueOval Charge Network expansion comes from steady growth from existing charging network providers, which include Shell Recharge Solutions, Electrify America, ChargePoint, EVgo, EV Connect, FLO, and Electric Circuit.

“Continuous growth of the BlueOval Charge Network, including a critical focus on reliable fast charging, remains a top priority to provide the best possible electric driving experience for our customers,” said Bill Crider, senior director of global charging and energy services, Ford Motor Company. “With the addition of the Tesla Supercharger Network along with new fast chargers coming to Ford Model e dealerships in 2024, we are working hard to make range anxiety a thing of the past for Ford all-electric drivers.”

A Fast-Growing Public Charging Network

The BlueOval Charge Network, North America’s largest public charging network by an automaker*, is a “network of networks” that provides Ford EV drivers with access to a variety of charging providers without the need for multiple apps and memberships. The network provides one seamless stored payment account through the FordPass App, or the in-vehicle’s touchscreen via Charge Assist, that eliminates the need for onsite credit card use. Once owners have created a BlueOval Charge Network account, they can then select, activate, and pay for charging by using the FordPass “Find Chargers” function. Plus, Ford customers can enjoy trip planning and routing through FordPass Power My Trip on both the App and in the embedded navigation system.

For commercial customers who need to charge on the go at a public charger, payment and billing will continue to operate seamlessly with Ford Pro Intelligence software. The software enables fleet operators to easily set up a single Public Charge Management account for centralized billing, charging logs and monthly invoicing, allowing them to manage charging costs no matter where their drivers power up.

Ford also is sharing an increase to the estimated number of Tesla Superchargers being added to the BlueOval Charge Network next year from 12,000 previously announced to more than 15,000, and growing. These fast, reliable chargers will be available next spring to Ford EV customers via an adapter, which will become available on accessories.ford.com early next year. Pricing is yet to be announced.

Additionally, Ford Model e dealers are adding public-facing fast-chargers to dealerships across the U.S. and Canada, providing new locations to the BlueOval Charge Network by early next year.

A Complement to Easy At-Home Charging

More than 80 percent of Ford EV drivers currently charge at home, creating an ideal ownership experience where most customers can wake up to a fully charged vehicle every morning. Ford’s home and commercial depot charging offerings deliver peace of mind to EV drivers, who also have access to fast-growing public charging as needed.

The BlueOval Charge Network is steadily growing to continue to provide customers with more public charging options than any other integrated public charging network. Together with home or depot charging solutions, whether on a daily commute or a longer road trip, Ford EV customers are covered.

While this is quite positive, I do not see Plug and Charge. Certainly is implied. Raises the question of whether the introduction of Charge Assist leads to the decommissioning of Plug and Charge as a formal term?

A minor detail, I admit.

Plug and Charge is an industry standard, not something made by Ford alone

The only network that today reliably supports Plug and Charge, to my knowledge, is EA.

That said, I fully expect Plug and Charge to work on the Tesla SuperChargers.

Yep. We used Francis Energy 3 times a few weeks ago. No P&C. Just used the FE app. Although they probably weren't even active in FP yet.

I suspect the increase in SC access from 12,000 to 15,000 is simply counting the new V3s and V4s (and maybe MDs) that Tesla has furiously been adding.

Why would it be implied? Most of the current BlueOval partners don't support it now.

Because this quote is in essence Plug and Charge, that is all.

FP still uses a singular payment account (your Ford Wallet), whether the session is activated with P&C or the FP app button.

While we're kindof on the Charge Assist topic...sortof. Wasn't that supposed to be pushed out OTA for anybody that didn't already have it? My MME was in the EA test...but so far Charge Assist has not shown up on my Lightning.

Many people aren't "app" people. Charge Assist requires one to get to the right screen, hit the button, know how to make it search, pick the right charger, etc. Using FordPass similar.

Plug and Charge a monkey can do. Open door, insert nozzle.

I feel very confident that Tesla's deal with Ford includes Ford Plug and Charge integration.

Good stuff, I suppose. Beyond the cost of the adapter, I'm curious how much it will cost to supercharge and whether it will be cost-competitive with EA and others.

Also curious to see the number of superchargers next year which already come with a dock. If it's a good number in the areas I'm likely to travel, there will be little point in purchasing an adapter right away.

There will be at least 3,500 SuperChargers with a Magic Dock by end of 2024.

Today, Tesla's charging costs are in many areas higher than others, but not all. In some areas they have off-peak rates also. Just read a post this weekend where Tesla, in Oregon, was notably cheaper than EA by a wide margin.
