The infrastructure throughout the US will not be even close to supporting even 60% adoption of EV’s. Instead of whining about tariffs and emissions maybe the smart money would update the electrical grid not only for potential EV’s, but for all of the other things everyone needs to power (A/C, charging devices, computers, all major appliances, lighting, water pumps, etc.). Pretty much everything people use every day uses electricity. Soon the current grids will fail catastrophically! How many remember not too long ago an overload near Cleveland caused the entire eastern seaboard to go dark!
EVs are not really a serious challenge for the grid... data centers on the other hand are a crusher.

Theres not going to be a sudden overnight change that will overload the current grid as it is. We’re talking 10 years from now. Upgrades will happen continually on the grid as necessary as electric demand continues to increase (from EVs and other things).

As more renewables and micro grid solutions are deployed, they can help satisfy and buffer local demand surges and dips without needing to overhaul massive transmission lines from power plants.

That’s my summer bill.

Winter is another story. Because of the gas heater my bill skyrockets.

My complaint is that they reduced my credit for the kw’s that I send to them by 40%. Now they are pushing through a bill to reduce the remaining amount by another 80%.

After the bill passes and it will out here, my true up at the end of the year will be shit.

Essentially they are just taking my excess electricity for pennies on the dollar, all while raising my energy bills.

It’s a bait and switch and blows my payoff projection out of the water.
Ah, got it. I have a wonderful heat pump, so my winter bills are $400+. So, basically $1,200-1,600 a year in the wintertime alone. And of course, the price just keeps going up. Maybe we will be allowed to have solar someday, but it’s not going to be soon 😢

ok betting lines are now open!

just over 93% of new car buyers own their home, so the charge from home requirement is already met for >9 in 10 new buyers.

50 years LOL! ICE is done from a desirability standpoint. The world has changed.

I'll bet we have a defacto 100% electric adoption in Cali by 2035.

:wait:
50 years wasn’t a prediction, it was just simplified math.

10+ years to get to 20% would mean 50 years to 100% if the rate of adoption remains the same.

And in the last few years? The rate of adoption hasn’t really been increasing. It would have to drastically increase to hit your 100% in 10 years.

2035 is 10 years in the future. Last year over 25% of new car sales in California were EVs, 5 years earlier it was about 7%. With newer cheaper models coming on the market they going to reach the 50% mark in the next few years.
That sounds like a rapid increase (and it was) until you find out that the rate of adoption completely stalled last year:

https://calmatters.org/environment/...%20of%20all%20new%20cars%20registered,25.3%25

Getting the first 25% to buy BEVs will be much faster and easier than to get the next 25 and next 25 and next 25….

100% will never happen without a mandate or no other choice (like all ICEs cease production and you can’t buy one even if you wanted to).

California is nuts.

even though I chose to by my Mach, it was not because of the mandate. You should be able to buy the vehicle you want.

California makes rules and regulations that don’t really fix things but create other problems. Examples include plastic bags and the minimum wage as well as the solar panels on all new homes.

I have solar panels and they keep lowering their electricity buy back prices. They have already reneged by 40% and now with the super majority want to cut the remaining 60% by another 80%.

Because of the mandate, there is too much extra power going back to the grid and the power companies are not getting enough money even though we have the highest energy prices already.

I say buy the vehicles you want and for energy use a mix of everything…

Until China and India clean up their act we could go 100% EV and it won’t solve anything but create other problems.
As a Californian, I ditto everything you stated.

EVs aren't a threat to the grid. New data centers are. New homes with air conditioning are. States that don't winterize their electric grids are.

There's some 265M light-duty passenger vehicles on the road today. Some 16M are sold each year. If we were to buy nothing but EVs starting tomorrow, it would take over 16 years to replace every ICE vehicle. That assumes we have enough diversity of models at various price points. Which we don't. There's no way we're getting to 60% of the vehicles on the road being EVs in just 10 years. I figure it will take at least 20 to 30 years. And ICE vehicles will still be around. California drew a dramatic line in the sand to get attention and light a fire under people's asses. If anyone thinks that they'll stick to their schedule, then I have a couple of bridges to sell you.

You sound like the people who opposed California setting their own emissions standards nearly 60 years ago. Which resulted in certain cars not being able to be sold in the state.

Well 60 years ago I was 1 year old 😛

I didn’t have much to say back then…

If the same thing were done today?
well, I’m living in it today.

Results are sky high gas and energy prices along with refineries leaving the state.

I can tell by the tenor of your posts that we are politically opposite and that’s ok…

So you like pollution, and cars that get crappy gas mileage and contribute to that pollution. Got it.

Dude, grow up and chill out.

I have 2 EV’s in my garage and solar panels on my house.

I’m done debating with you with your childish “you’re for pollution “ crap.

1 more EV, and a few more panels on the roof, and maybe, just maybe, you will no longer be one of those people. 🤣

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I absolutely love Electrified cars, trucks, motorcycles, tools...........
It's a fascinating time as a consumer and enthusiast. But I really do feeeeel for my fellow countrymen that are paying double the price for fuel and electricity. (and many other products and services) Just seems so manipulated. Intentional.

Some people genuinely require AC for health reasons.
