Last night, I was driving on a 4 lane divided limited access highway, doing 65 MPH with intelligent cruise control on. The Blue Bubble of happiness was surrounding my car, and the car was gently steering along with my hands at 9 and 3, gently applying torque, as necessary to make sure it was centered where I wanted it in the lane. This was a well-striped road, and the weather was clear. Little to no other traffic. All of a sudden, the bubble turns bright orange, and the hands on steering wheel icon turns to the text “Cancelled”. The system then reverts to regular adaptive cruise control with lane keeping. I was unable to get intelligent cruise control to re-engage. When I returned home later that night, intelligent cruise control worked without any problems.
has anyone else seen this? Any idea what may have happened?

I've seen that before, usually when the car tries to follow a line I don't want it to, and I hold the wheel and prevent it from steering.

On occasion though it has come up just going down the road with no steering input. Always turns right back on though.

Yeah, it’s happened to me. It seems like it is reacting to excessive(?) input by me - kind of like “hey! Who’s driving? Me or you?” I’ve seen it reengage on its own - like it was more of a warning than an action. I’ve also seen it disconnect completely. That, to me, is a little too subtle. I used to fly planes for a living. From hard lessons learned, when the autopilot disconnects for any reason, there is a LOUD whaling siren that goes off - that, so there are no insidious disconnects. There is no missing that siren. You immediately know that someone needs to start flying the plane because “George” just quit.

This is driving assist, and nothing like autopilot. The subtle disconnect notice should be one of the many signs you notice right away that LKAS is off or not going to do its part of assisting you. It's probably a design consideration too if there are sleeping kids or something in the car you don't want a loud buzz every time the system can't see a lane.

Jim - I assume what stopped working the rest of the drive was speed sign recognition? While it is normal for the auto lance centering to occasionally do that (ordinarily where the lines are wonky or at merge/split points), it comes back on shortly as yours apparently did. I haven't seen anyone complain of the speed sign recognition disable itself, though.

I can’t speak to speed sign recognition - the speed sign indicator continued to be displayed in the IP. The car just reverted to regular adaptive cruise control with lane keeping. The indicators were the vertical green lane keeping indicators and the blue distance indicator at the front of the car.

mine goes off all the time, but within a few seconds re-engages by it self with no intervention. I guess it sometimes gets spooked and doesn't want to take the chance.

Ah - right, "lane keeping" vs "lane centering".

I got thrown off by "regular adaptive cruise control" after your initial statement "intelligent cruise control on".

Anyway, I haven't seen it go from lane centering to lane keeping unless cruise control is off. Wonky bug for sure.

I’ve seen it “blink” cancelled a couple of times in the past, but it was only for a second or two before intelligent cruise control resumed, so I figured that it just hit an area that was too complex for it to handle, then when the situation passed, it was able to continue intelligent cruise control. As I said, in this case, the driving conditions were pretty ideal, no traffic, well marked, limited access highway, clear weather. It was odd that cancelled then would not re-engage as intelligent cruise control no matter what. I did try turning off cruise control and turning it back on, I tried turning off and on lane-keeping, and I tried changing the vehicle spacing. Nothing would get intelligent cruise control to re-engage. Later, when I got back into the car and took the same route home, intelligent cruise control worked flawlessly. Go figure?

We had the same thing happen and no matter what I pressed, we couldn't get the Bubble to reengage, got a message that said Cruise or Adaptive cruise Not available. We continued to Panama City and then after we shopped a bit, when we got back in the car, our self nicknamed 'Drivers Bubble-Buddy' was back

We tried turning off the intelligent cruise and no luck, we tried shutting off adaptive cruise, no luck, still got "Not available". I ran the window washers thinking out Clean Mach E windshield had a bird dropping right over the rearview mirror camera area, no luck and when. We did stop, visually confirmed it was clean.
Not sure what cause was, but like I said on Restart BB was back. At no point did it endanger our lives.

We've also experienced or when a new left lane is created on a highway as it opens up sometimes it will try to follow the new lane opening line where we as responsible drivers were still doing our part monitoring as Primary Pilot takes the wheel keeping it in the lane until the lane markings become solid again but now with the new lane on our left.

Not sure what caused my Bubble Buddy to disengage and refuse to allow cruise was caused by, but yes have experienced it.

Your terminology is a little off:
  • adaptive cruise control: keeps speed at a set level, unless the sensors detect something in front of you, in which case it will automatically adjust your speed (or stop) to keep your preferred distance in front of you.
  • intelligent cruise control: adaptive cruise PLUS it reads speed signs to adjust the speed
  • lane keep assist: monitors the lines in the road and warns you when you get too close/go over them.
  • automatic lane centering: uses the same sensors as lane keep assist, but actually steers the car to keep it centered. requires adaptive or intelligent cruise control to be turned on.

Thanks. I actually do know what the different ADAS systems are. That wasn’t my question. My question was simply why the intelligent cruise control with lane centering inexplicably canceled and couldn’t be resumed, leaving me with only adaptive cruise control and lane keeping.

I think what he was getting at is it appears that into intelligent cruise is still active. It's only the lane centering that cancels. Meaning intelligent cruise and lane centering are not one and the same thing.
Is that true? Or is intelligent cruise (automatic speed limit detection) also turning off at the same time?

Yes, that is what I am getting at. It sounds like it was the auto lane centering that canceled, but cruise control was still active. "Intelligent cruise control" ONLY refers to the speed limit recognition feature of cruise control. Intelligent cruise control is NOT auto lane centering; auto lane centering works fine with adaptive cruise control.

Sigh… ok. Let me try again. Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping is what was active. Not intelligent cruise control. Not lane centering. I know what intelligent cruise control is. I know what lane centering is. The vehicle reverted to simple adaptive cruise control where it maintained a set speed unless it came up to a car going slower, then it slowed to maintain a set distance behind that car. It did NOT change speeds when the speed limit signs on the road changed. No intelligent cruise control. I’m not sure how to be any more clear.
Sorry. I really shouldn’t have asked. 🙁
