Charging Door Opened in Car Wash

Wife sent Mach E into the car wash - during the spraying of the side panels, the force opened the charging port cover.
Since the car was on a moving track, she could not move forward or back.
Somehow the system wasn’t damaged. Maybe there is a mechanism to prevent material from entering - maybe we got lucky!!!
Ford Motor - if you’re monitoring, ya might want to implement a better latching system.

Happened to me twice out of many many washes. Now I put a piece of painter tape over the door before going to the wash.

yep this has been a problem since day one. Good idea to use some tape before going into the car wash

I do the painter tape thingy also... also put a pice of painter tape on the frunk access port on the front bumper....

I haven't been to an automatic car wash since I was a teenager and that was around forty + years ago.

This is a major design issue with the Mach-E. Owners shouldn't have use to painter's tape so they can take their MME into an automatic carwash.

Rather than debate with Ford about who is at fault, Ford or Driven Carwash, I stupidly paid $130 for the charge port door cover replacement. Clearly, this is becoming a big issue for more people on this forum.

This happened to me once. The charge port door skin came off. I was able to retrieve it. It’s held on to the actual charge port door structure by a one-way “ramp clip” (my name. I don’t know the official name). Anyway, you can’t replace a portion of the charge port door structure, you have to replace the entire thing. It’s a few hundred bucks plus labor. Fortunately, ESP covered all but $50 or $100 of the cost. My dealer told me they’ve seen the issue several times (I didn’t even have to describe the entire issue - he recognized it as soon as I said charge port door).

Not sure I would call it a “major” design issue. “Major” design issues include:
- the nano frunk introduced in MY25
- the super-mega-ultra-multi stock (also a MY25 gift).
- decontenting over the years to include the removal of park assist, hands-free liftgate, etc)

The mechanism to prevent this is called painter's tape. I keep a roll in my center console.

A better solution: handwashing. The other day, when it was nice out and I needed a good excuse to be outside, I handwashed my car. Wow! What a difference. I did not think it would really matter but it does when you've got a nice paint like Star White that glistens in the sun. Unfortunately, where I live, washing your car in the driveway isn't advisable a large portion of the year, so I'll have to keep the painter's tape.
