Hello,

ive had my Mach e for a month now and when I charge it I only allow it up to 85%… that being said I have never charged it higher than that.
Should you be charging it to 100% once every so often?
Thank you

I suppose you could if you wanted to. Most folks will say only do that when you plan a longer trip. I did it the other day just to see what the GOM (guess o meter) would show.

Lithium ion batteries have no memory, they don’t like to be fully charged, they don’t like to be really low, they don’t like heat, and they don’t like cold.

Keep doing what your doing. Once the batteries start degrading you might have to do a 20-100 charge if you feel the level indication is a little off but that won’t be for a long time.

Only you can decide what to do.

Personally I charge to the allowed 100%/max when I charge L2 once a week or so. Due to the large buffer you cant really get to 100%. I dont let it sit at 100% or low SOC.

Charging to L2 max does help with wear leveling but not really needed more than like once a year...

What maybe more useful os to watch the launches. The car can drain at 250kw+ at max power draw!

Ford has been incredibly conservative with the battery buffer, so when you charge to "100%" as indicated on the vehicles state of charge indicator, your basically only charging to about 89% of the real gross capacity of the pack.

For context the Mach-E extended range battery is reported to have a gross capacity of 98.5kwh, but only 88kwh of that is allowed to be used by the user, which means we are only allowed to use 89% of the pack, while roughly 11% is kept in reserve to protect the pack from the user.

All of this is a long winded way of saying that you can charge to any state of charge that you require, while feeling quite confident that Ford's decision to be ultra conservative means your battery will likely never degrade to the point where a warranty claim is ever necessary, since degradation will be kept quite low in reality.

What everyone has said here is great already, and Ford understood that people would charge to 100% often. Just don't charge to 100% and then leave it sitting for a long time; that's not fantastic.

Keep doing 85-90% on a normal day, and if you have a lot of driving to do the next day or if you're heading out on a road trip, charge to 100% before that. If you're charging to 100% but then using that charge pretty quickly thereafter, you're good.

I only charge it to 100% if I know I will be driving over 100 miles the next day. Otherwise I charge to 90 and let it run down past 50. That said we do usually go on at least one long trip every other week if not more, and then there is the wife charging it to $100 to go on long range shopping expeditions so.........

What you are doing is fine. No worries. Just charge to 100% when you think you need it otherwise if 85% works for you then just stick with that.

Lithium ion batteries primary problem is plating of the electrodes which only occurs at the lowest and highest voltages the cells can achieve. So in general you just want to avoid the lowest and highest 10%. However, mostly that’s already done in battery tech voltages and ford is taking it further by saving another 10% off the top. They are playing it very safe and its debatable how much better life you’ll get adding another safety margin at all.

The manual states 90% tops unless going on a long trip. Used a Fast DC charger at an outlet mall. Using the credits, it was free. The shopping was not. LOL

This is great info! Does anyone know how to change the max from 100% charge in Ford Pass app EV page when plugged in? I set up my preferred charge location at home to 90% but for some reason my charge often goes to 100% despite my settings.

It seems to work more reliably if you enter your charge settings in the car on the big screen.

Only charge it above 90% right before using it on a road trip, do not let it sit parked over 90% for more than a few hours to avoid battery degradation, especially in warm temps.

You absolutely don't need to charge above 90% ever unless you need to for extra range. The battery will balance itself at lower charge levels so it stays fully optimized even if you are only charging it to 50% every day.
