It's the kind of behavior that's going to backfire on China long term. It just re-emphasizes the need to move critical manufacturing to either domestic or more friendly partners.

I would have far less issue with Chinese companies if they actually had true autonomy from the government. If this were the case CATL wouldn't give a rat's hiney about what politicians visit where. I would also have more faith in the security of their products. Yah, time for the US to take the "buy local" trend to the next level. Not to mention shorter shipping distances are more sustainable. Now someone help me down off this box, I'm old now.

Most likely they underbid other less state owned companies, Ford and Telsa bit on the hook and now the CCP is now jerking Chains. Well that is what you get when you sign deals with parties that run down their opposition with tanks, practices genocide and employs slave labor. Spread sheet wizards one and all.....

Agree. This event really shows how all large Chinese companies are really just the CCP, either directly, or indirectly (even the ones that are publicly traded are financed through chinese banks - it's a shell game). I know CATL is supposed to be one of the leading battery manufacturers, but it would be great if this spurred Ford to look elsewhere.

Site selection is being delayed by a month or two? That doesn't seem overly catastrophic.

If this escalates further, there will probably be more delays, but agreed that it's safer to have critical things made at more friendly nations to not worry about this in the future.

There was the back and forth with tax credits of EVs and even chips, but if a foreign government supports their local industries to beat ours/US/everyone elses to the point of making it not worth investing at home, then due to national security, it does seem to make some sense to help keep some things made here to avoid this issue. Like when we had no masks because they were mostly made in China, that puts you in a bad spot.

Sames goes for Russia and gas to the rest of Europe. It's cheaper/more efficient in Russia, but they can cut you off completely and folks will be suffering.

How hard is it to make batteries. We have lithium in the Salton Sea.
Indeed. Perhaps the largest mineable source of lithium on the planet is in old mining ghost towns of Nevada. They just need to ramp up the infrastructure to get more of it out more quickly more efficiently more economically and we will be fine in a few years.

That's with SK a South Korean battery company.

This story today confirms they are still headed to US

Diversity in battery production no matter the company's parent headquarters location is key to the US production capacity that is needed to meet any automotive goals. I hope all the various deals move forward and are completed in the years ahead for the US.

They have an unnamed source, CATL(China) hasn't confirmed anything though I would say it's a good guess.
