How much should a clear wrap cost? Locally, I have a quote that is $6,000 + warranty cost... Does that sound right?

I assume that’s for the entire vehicle? Not sure why they’re quoting warranty separate but the $6k for the full car is in line with what I saw here when I was researching (nothing extra for warranty, but then sales tax of course). I decided on a track package (full front and lower part of doors, plus the rear wheel flares) and then full-car ceramic, and have been happy with it so far. Good luck.

Yep. Full car. They said that they don't do ceramic on the clear wraps.

Some PPF films are not compatible with ceramic coatings. Many, if not most, are. The combination of the two is a great setup for protecting your paint.

Cost seems in line… but definitely price shop, and be conscientious of the quality of work being done.

There are many detail and custom shops around me, so I was able to negotiate a little on pricing for full PPF plus ceramic plus some window tinting.

I wasn’t looking for the rock bottom price as you risk getting exactly what you pay for. I visited the shop to talk to the owners and understood them to be car care enthusiasts and people who pride themselves on building customer relationships. Also, I was able to see examples of their work and verify the quality that I’d be getting. Ultimately it turned out to be an awesome experience.

A few things to consider,…
  • You can ask for things like getting the side badges removed (which I did) making sure you get full PPF on the side doors.
  • I got XPEL PPF and was positively surprised that they covered nearly everything including the front door handles, B pillars, the piano black window trim, and the rear deck spoiler.

I’m glad you mentioned the window trim / door buttons - my shop said that area can get pretty scratched up and so added PPF there, in addition to the track package…

The absolutely most important factor in getting PPF is the skill and experience level of the installer. I would ask the shop how many MME's they have applied PPF to and ask to see examples of their work. Pay close attention to the edges of the PPF. As others have mentioned, I would be careful about going for the lowest cost. This may be an indication of a less experienced professional.

I had Xpel PPF installed on my 2018 Tesla back in Dec 2018 by a very reputable local shop in Southern California. It looks as good today as it did at time of installation. And I park my car outside 24/7. Your price quote of around $6K for the whole car sounds about right for a high quality PPF such as Xpel.

So my local company has this clear wrap called Clear Shield from Solar Guard. Is that even good?

So I asked for this and they came back with a quote of $2,000 dollars more making the final quote $8,000 dollars. I really feel like they pulled these numbers from their ass.

I have never heard of that brand of PPF. A quick search online indicated that the warranty for that brand of PPF is 5 years. That is half of the standard warranty for other PPF brands such as Xpel and Suntek, which makes me wonder if it is an inferior product. And $8,500 with tax seems super expensive.

I am super happy with my Xpel PPF. I suggest you visit the Xpel website, contact Xpel customer support, and ask to be referred to an Xpel-authorized installer in your area. Then contact that installer for a quote. Xpel's customer service has always been outstanding and I highly recommend them.

I would suggest that you consider a full FRONT PPF such as XPEL, then put ceramic over the entire car, including over the PPF. If you have a garage, you could do the ceramic yourself and save a lot of $$. You could do that for about a third of the price you are talking about.

The ceramic would help keep the car clean and shiny, and the PPF on the front would prevent most rock chips. PPF on door and hatch sills is a good idea also. If you have dogs jumping up against your car, that might be another story. ?

mindblown (thats expensive)

just a question, why would you want to ppf the car? costs more than 10% of your cars value and you wont get it back when you sell the car either. would probably be cheaper to fix any dents or scratches during the life of the car no?

This is a great option. You save money on the PPF and the most vulnerable parts of the car are covered.

If you don't want to pay for a ceramic coating or do a coating yourself, you can also easily and quickly apply a ceramic spray sealant on top of the PPF and the rest of the car. Ceramic spray sealants are not as robust as an actual ceramic coating. They have to be reapplied every 3-5 months. But they are so easy to apply that you can easily do this.

I got Xpel PPF on my 2018 Tesla, but never did a ceramic coating. I applied a ceramic spray sealant every 2-3 months and the PPF still looks just as good as the day it was installed.
