What happens if park is selected with the knob while driving at highway speed limit. Will it engage? Would it prompt a series of fault conditions? Just wondering...
You can put it in Neutral while driving, but you can't put it in Reverse or Park.

I may have described it - it wasn't a skid but a hard brake to a stop. But the wheels and gear knob did completely lock up at some point. The rear wheels dragged when the transport driver tried to pull it up the truck ramp.
There is a lot to know, and especially difficult in that kind of situation, but there is an emergency tow mode. I wonder if it could have unlocked the brakes:

No idea, thought it was quite intuitive. Maybe he didn't see it appear.

For those that don't know....

Touch the picture of the car and it will take you to settings. When it does this the car changes orientation a bit and the x shows up. Then you push the logo of the car with the x to go back to main Home Screen. It is quite obvious I think if you are watching the animation to get there.

My guess is the OP was focused on other things and just saw the X at some point and wasn't sure why it was there. Coming off the major problems he had I can understand that. For a normal user who sits down and then pushes the button to get to settings they should see the animation and it should make sense.
The X is confusing for those of use who've had our MMEs for a while. I'm (slowly) getting some of the 1.7.1 updates and the sudden X appearing, to me, seemed to signify something was wrong. I never had an intuitive problem navigating to and from the Home/Settings screen, so the sudden X on the car icon signified a different meaning for me. I now 'get it' but see how others could be confused by it.

Maybe they should not have used an X, maybe a back arrow? As in

I work with a guy who, whenever there's a problem goes in and fires everything he knows at it.

When he comes back, "so, what did you do to fix it"?

He'll tell you he did all kinds of things but, really, he has no idea what fixed it.

That write up made me think of him.

That is how you can get multiple people killed....

Interesting tidbit, pretty sure there was a post on here about a Tesla that did the exact same thing and everyone was roasting Tesla.. Whelp....... lol
My VW ID.4 on day 5 shut down electrically... a dozen errors over 5-10 seconds and suddenly everything went dark... just as I was able to turn off into the left turn lane (whew). Otherwise I would have been stuck in the middle of the road like the OP.

I'm not that surprised to be honest. First-gen cars have gremlins. VW is supposedly replacing all 12V lead-acid batteries with lithium ones on the ID.4.

I am glad to be rid of that car though. Didn't trust it after the failure.

Hell if I know. It all happened so damned fast I'm not sure what actually occurred. I was a bit preoccupied with not getting smashed from behind and figuring out how I was going to get out of that situation. It's an interesting question, though, as to what the fail-safe mode is.
Terrifying…. For perspective my bosses Mercedes brake by wire system failed in the opposite mode… no brakes. He coasted to a stop and Mercedes’ came for the car. Neither of these is good but if I had to pick I think I’d choose bakes on.

I have selected P instead of D while backing up by accident. I hadn't come to a complete stop and the parking pawl attempted to throw and it made a ratcheting sound until it eventually grabbed and the car came to a sudden stop. Was very upset with myself for doing that. I just haven't become super comfortable with the dial for a gear selector yet.

Today, rather tired after work, I spun the volume knob clockwise instead of the gear knob.

About 2 weeks ago I was pulling out of a Walmart parking spot. I put the car in D and slowly started moving forward. The car suddenly gave me the Park Brake Engaged warning on the instrument cluster and the car suddenly stopped. Then as quick as it happened, it released. No faults were observed. I was going maybe 1 to 2 mph when it happened. I also use 1pd all the time.

No, I didn’t pull the park brake switch.

I never tried it in reverse. I wonder if the logic that prevents it is based on speed or direction. I tried it in a loaner car and it wouldn't let me put it in Park or Reverse while driving at about 30mph. I had to try it for science.

Please keep us updated, especially what @Ford Motor Company answered.
Will do. I'm super impressed Ford is even active on this forum. Emily was the contact and she came up on the PM immediately. She logged a ticket with a Customer Experience Specialist on the EV Team. I don't know what that means, exactly, or what kind of technical expertise that taps into, but I should hear back in a few days.

Yeah, good luck with that. I dealt with them twice. They promise a response in 2 days. Well after 10 days I finally heard from them. We went back and forth for almost a month until the final answer was bring it into the dealer. Then they never responded again.
